        Though formed in 1998, Matt Pike, Des Kensel, and George Rice wouldn't release their debut album, The Art of Self Defense, until the year 2000. Their characteristic heavy sound brought them attention in the doom metal scene and in 2001, switched labels from Tee Pee Records to Relapse Records, based out of Pennsylvania. The group would lose former bassist George Rice shortly after the promotional tours for their album Surrounded By Thieves, but he was soon replaced by Joe Preston. Though Preston would perform with High On Fire for several tours, he was replaced by the bassist for hardcore band Zeke, Jeff Matz. The band's success has spilled from the world of metal to that of video game soundtracks as one of their tracks was featured in the 2010 remake of Splatterhouse.
