Hillsong United would be a slow building music project that would start with the efforts of youth pastors
Lucinda and Phil Dooley. Members of the Hillsong Church group, a pentecostal association of churches based largely in Australia,
the two headed the Powerhouse Youth ministry, and avenue for the two to reach out to young members of the Hillsong Christian
community. The two would slowly build a band that would become house performers at all Hillsong Church functions, eventually
branching into interdenominational services rendered all across Australia. Between their own performances under Hillsong United
or their collaborations as part of the interdenominational Christian supergroup Youth Alive Australia, the band has become
one of the foundational artists within the Christian music world, constantly pushing the genre to bigger heights and broader
audiences all over the world.
Over time, the Powerhouse Youth band would focus itself into a more and more professional
entity. Under the direction of visionary musicians such as Reuben Morgan, Marcus Beaumont, Tanya Riches, and Mark Stevens,
the band would mature into a veritable powerhouse supergroup, with a consistent musical appeal and delivery despite a constantly
shifting lineup of youth musicians. The group would become so popular and dynamic that it would split into two separate ensembles,
one for young teens and the other for eighteen and over musicians. The younger group would be headed up by already established
Christian rockers Joel Houston and Marty Sampson. Each of the groups would hone their musical skills at various Hillsong united
church events, including yearly gatherings at youth ministry Summer Camps, where the true spirit and nature of Hillsong United
would be forged.
By 1998 the band would hit the recording studio for the first time, immediately becoming commercial
success after building such a large fanbase all over Australia. The band would undergo a passing of the torch leadership change,
with Reuben Morgan stepping down in lieu of Joel Houston and Marty Sampson. The pass-off would signify the true character
of Hillsong United, marking that the spirit of the music and the camaraderie from performance are more important than contributions
from just a single member.
Officially operating under the name Hillsong United as of 2002, the band has produced a non
stop stream of hits totaling over twenty recordings, and is showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to their original
releases, the band frequently releases worship DVDs that demonstrate the band's incredible live performances, along with a
behind the scenes documentary that goes in depth on Hillsong United, how their music is made, and how the band operates. More
than a decade on, Hillsong United is showing no signs of slowing down as they constantly put out hit new albums and lead the
Hillsong Pentecostal churches in all of their worship needs.
The band's full length debut
Everyday would drop in 1999, under the production tutelage of Darlene Zschech and band leader Reuben Morgan. The album would
be a huge success, going certified gold and receiving unadulterated praise from critics including a perfect ten out of ten
from Cross Rhythms critic Tim Roberts. The album spawned unforgettable Christian rock hits such as "Everyday", "On the Lord's
Day", and "God is Moving".
The band's steady stream of success would grow exponentially with the 2007 release All of
the Above, released on their own Hillsong record label. The album would light up music charts across the board, including
a #1 showing on the US Christian charts, #6 on the top Australian charts, and #13 in New Zealand. The album would land the
band front and center at the Dove Awards, with a nomination for Praise & Worship Album of the Year.
band's most important release to date would be 2013's Zion. The album would claim the top spot on a multitude of music charts,
including the Australian albums chart, the US Christian chart, and on both US and Australia's iTunes charts. The album received
rave reviews from critics across the board, with multiple perfect scores, and spawned two hit singles: "Scandal of Grace"
and "Oceans (where Feet May Fail)", with the latter becoming possibly the band's most well known super hit.
band has become a foundational part of the Christian music community, and possibly the most influential Christian group in
Australia. KJ-52, a Christian music rapper, would remake the hit Hillsong United track "Go", and the band would release The
White Album in 2014, a project devoted to Hillsong United remixes.
