Spawned in Finland's capital
Helsinki and pioneering the genre they called "love metal," HIM stands for the band's original moniker of His Infernal Majesty.
The band would come together in 1991 with Ville Valo on vocals, Mikke "Linde" Lindström on guitar, and Mikko "Migé"
Paananen on bass. They would put out two demos and recruit drummer Juhana Tuomas Rantala in 1992. They would eventually attract
the attention of label BMG, and would release their first official studio album 666 Ways to Love: Prologue in 1996. This album
would only be released in Finland and a mere 1000 copies were made.
The band would truncate their name to HIM for their
1997 release Greatest Lovesongs, Vol. 666. They would have added Antto Einari Melasniemi on keyboard. After gaining a cult
following across Europe, HIM would move on to a US release of Razorblade Romance, of which 1000 copies were made with the
moniker HER due an initial challenge in securing the rights to the name HIM. In the fall of 2001 HIM released Deep Shadows
and Brilliant Highlights which featured newest member Emerson Burton on keyboard.
Their US breakthrough album Dark Light
would be released in 2005, and would be followed by Uneasy Listening, Vol. 1 in 2006 and Uneasy Listening, Vol. 2 in 2007.
Their sixth studio album Venus Doom would also come out in 2007. Digital Versatile Doom, released in 2008, would be HIM's
first live album and DVD set. 2010 would see the release of Screamworks: Love in Theory and in Practice, Chapters 1-13.
would leave Sire/Warner records in 2011 and begin developing their next album, but would be held up by drummer Gas Lipstick's
bone condition. Producer Tim Palmer, who had collaborated on Venus Doom and Dark Light, revealed in the summer of 2012 that
he was again working on HIM's newest material. Tears on Tape, HIM's eighth studio album, would come out at the beginning of
HIM would have established a cult following in Finland and Europe when they released
"Join Me In Death" from Razorblade Romance. The single would become the best-selling single in Finland to date.
Dark Light would mark HIM's true arrival on the US music scene. It would be the very first album from Finland to be certified
gold in the States, and climbed to number twenty on the Billboard 200. 2007's Venus Doom would peak even higher on the Billboard
200 at number twelve. In 2010, Screamworks: Love in Theory and in Practice, Chapters 1-13 would cement their loyal rock and
alternative following as it topped the Hard Rock Albums chart. HIM's latest release, Tears on Tape, would again snag the coveted
top spot on that chart.
You have to take HIM's word for it that Witches and Other Night Fears,
HIM's very first demo, actually exists. The only copy of this recording is rumored to held by Ville Valo.
on the cover of 666 Ways to Love: Prologue, HIM's debut EP, is reportedly Ville Valo's own mother, who was working at that
time in a shoe shop.
