Gregg Gillis is a wizard in the studio and on the decks. An avid music geek with a love for a wide variety of genres—most notably pop and hip-hop—he’s not content to just listen to the same tracks in his music collection over and over. He cuts them up, smashes them together, and churns out wicked party songs from the remains. Get Girl Talk tickets now!
By day, Gillis works as a biomedical research engineer. But at night, he’s hitting the clubs, sometimes stripping down to his underwear during live performances while mashing together songs. The mash-up phenomenon has gotten bigger in recent years, often slicing and dicing obscure songs and layering a cool beat over some awesome vocals. Gillis seems to revel in using well-known hit songs and turning them into his own creations.
Gillis released his debut album, Secret Diary, on the Illegal Art label. He started attracting major attention for 2006’s Night Ripper, and saw his audience and renown grow with 2008’s Feed the Animals. On just one track from the latter album, Gillis mashes artists as diverse as Pete Townsend, Roy Orbison, Twisted Sister, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ludacris, T.I. and Aaliya. Gillis is exploring a unique new genre of music, and you can bet concert tickets to his shows are going to be selling fast.
