The Ice Breaker Tournament serves as a competitive early season test for some contenders of the NCAA championship.

Since 1997, the event has taken place at a slew of on- and off-campus venues, including the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin; the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota; and the Scottrade Center in St Louis, Missouri.

Past trophy-holding champs of the Ice Breaker Tournament include Boston University (three times); New Hampshire (two times); Boston College (two times); Colorado College, Michigan State, Denver, Minnesota, Nebraska-Omaha, Notre Dame, North Dakota, Vermont and St. Cloud State.

The Ice Breaker Tournament brings four of the country's top teams, representing different conferences, to go blade-to-blade for the championship trophy. The tournament also offers a remarkable opportunity to illuminate college hockey as the season gets started.

The 2014 Ice Breaker Tournament, hosted at the Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, features the Minnesota's Golden Gophers, Mercyhurst, Clarkson and New Hampshire. Last year's event set at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, where Notre Dame claimed victory while America looked on. This Ice Breaker Tournament was broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.

College Hockey Trivia

So you think you're pretty sharp when it comes to college hockey trivia, hey? Here are some quick fun facts that may surprise you.

Did you know that Hockey Hall of Famer Frank "Mr. Zero" Brimsek once played hockey for St. Cloud State? Yes, it's true. Brimsek manned the goal for his alma mater St. Cloud in 1933-34 when it was a teacher's college. Later on, Brimsek played with the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Here's another one for you... Did you know that University of Wisconsin player, Ulvis Katlaps, was the first Latvian to play U.S. college hockey? For two seasons Katlaps played for the Badgers from 1992-1994.

Have any of these surprised you yet? How about this one... What Boston College goalie recorded 82 saves in one game, including 19 in overtime? The answer is Tim Ready. Ready surely lived up to his last name and halted 82 of 83 of Princeton's goal attempts.
