About Ice Cube
Iconic rapper Ice Cube began his career in the hip hop group
C.I.A., and later the infamous N.W.A., along with Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. After leaving N.W.A. in 1989, Ice Cube began his successful
solo career, which ended up included music and film.
While he was a high school student, Ice Cube began taking up an
interest in hip hop music, and he started writing raps. With other fellow rappers, including Sir Jinx, Ice Cube began performing
at local parties hosted by Dr. Dre. After Dr. Dre started working on records with the World Class Wreckin' Cru, he enlisted
Ice Cube's help as a writer. Ice Cube later became a full-time member of N.W.A., and contributed significantly to the group's
"Straight Outta Compton" album. However, due to issues with the group's manager, he soon left the group and the label. By
1989, Ice Cube had recorded his first solo album, "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted." After its release in 1990, the album was an instant
hit and reflected the rise of West Coast rap during the 90s. Ice Cube released his second album "Death Certificate" in 1991,
which included two thematic sides: a "death side" and a "life side." The two sides to this album represented "where we are
today, and where we need to go," but some interpreted it as being racist and misogynist. Ice Cube's songs have always been
met with controversy by the mainstream, but there's no doubt that he was able to effortlessly weave storytelling of South
Central LA's rough life with catchy beats and rhymes that the mainstream loved. In fact, after the release of this album,
Ice Cube toured with Lollapalooza in 1992, bringing his gangsta rap to an even larger audience.
Ice Cube returned to
the studio and released his third album "The Predator" in 1992, which made notable references to the Los Angeles riots in
the single, "Wicked." This iconic album was the first in history to debut at number one on both the R&B and pop charts.
"The Predator" was Ice Cube's most commercially successful, with fan favorite tracks "It Was a Good Day" and "Check Yo Self."
addition to his music career, Ice Cube has also enjoyed a foray into film. His role as Doughboy in the film "Boyz n the Hood"
showed that he was also a talented actor, and he thereafter got roles in "Trespass" and "The Glass Shield." Most notably,
however, was his role in the comedy "Friday" in 1995. Ice Cube also wrote the screenplay for the successful film that eventually
spawned two sequels. Ice Cube has also appeared in "Dangerous Ground," "Anaconda," "Barbershop," "All About the Benjamins,"
"Torque," "Are We There Yet?" and "XXX: State of the Union."
Ice Cube Breakthrough Album
Ice Cube's music
broke through to the mainstream with the release of his debut solo album, "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted." The album was an instant
hit, and remains one of the most influential hip hop albums of the 90s. It hit the number one spot on the U.S. rap charts,
and received a number of accolades, including being listed as one of the Essential Recordings of the 90s by Rolling Stone,
Albums of the Year by the Village Voice, one of the Top 25 Hip-Hop Albums, and Album of the Year by Spin Magazine.
