About the Artist
Iggy Azalea was born Amethyst
Amelia Kelly in Sydney but grew up in New South Wales, Australia and began rapping at 14 when she formed a three girl group
with two other girls in her neighborhood. The group modeled itself after T.L.C., with Iggy Azalea attempting to fill the role
of Lisa Left Eye Lopez. She felt that the group was not taking things seriously enough and soon left the band. Iggy Azalea
had a dream of moving to the United States and making it big in music so she dropped out of high school, where she had been
subject to ridicule for her outrageous homemade outfits, and began working full time to save up for her move. Shortly before
she turned 16 Iggy Azalea told her parents she was leaving for the United States on vacation but really planned on staying
because she wanted to be in the country that gave birth to hip hop. She spent time in Miami, Houston, and Atlanta, before
finally settling in Los Angeles at the urging of record companies. While in Los Angeles she began uploading videos of herself
freestyling to YouTube and eventually recorded a video for her song Pu$$y. She released the mixtape Ignorant Art in 2011 which
featured Pu$$y as well as two other songs she made videos for, My World and The Last Song. Later that year she claimed to
have completed an album The New Classic which would be released when she signed a record deal. Azalea ran into some record
label issues when Interscope did not want her working with T.I. so she remained on an independent label and released an E.P.
Glory in 2012. In 2013 Iggy azalea toured with Beyonce on her Mrs. Carter tour and took some time off of working on The New
Classic. She also performed the song Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke at the MTV Europe Video Music Awards and signed a record
deal with Island Def Jam.
Iggy Azalea's freestyle raps were gaining some attention on her
YouTube channel, but when she uploaded her video for Pu$$y things really blew up. The video went viral and soon people all
over the world knew who Iggy Azalea was. Two other videos that followed, The Last Song and My World, also were immensely popular
on YouTube. Her YouTube page now has close to 70,000 subscribers and several videos including some that have been viewed more
than 30 million times. Her popularity in social media of course won the attention of record labels and she eventually ended
up signing with Grand Hustle Records after Interscope did not want her to continue working with T.I. on her first studio album
The New Classic.
You have been waiting for months for this night to come and finally as
the lights lower you begin to see Iggy Azalea making her way out onto the stage. The crowd erupts in applause as the talented
performer approaches the mic. A hush falls over the crowd as Iggy Azalea thanks them and launches into a fan favorite like
Work, Pu$$y, or The Last Song. The crowd once again erupts and sings and dances along to hits throughout the night. Iggy Azalea
may still be in her early twenties but she is a veteran performer who definitely knows her way around the stage and how to
work a crowd, this will be evident from the moment she hits the stage until the second she steps off accompanied by the cheers
of thousands of fans. The high energy output from Iggy Azalea translates perfectly to the crowd and you spend the entire night
dancing and singing along.
In 2012 Iggy Azalea was featured on the cover of XXL Magazine's Top
10 Freshman issue and was the first non-American, as well as the first woman to receive the honor. For a while Iggy Azalea
was dating A$AP Rocky and had the title of his mixtape Live. Love. A$AP. tattooed on her fingers. In 2012 they broke up and
Iggy had the name A$AP crossed out. She currently is dating NBA player Nick Young. In 2012 Iggy Azalea signed with Wilhelmina
Models, an agency that also has represented Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, and Estelle.
