Illinois State Fairgrounds History
The Illinois State Fairgrounds has been one of the biggest attractions in Springfield,
Illinois for over a century and a half. Ever since the venue first opened in 1853 many of the biggest events in Illinois including
the Illinois State Fair and has served as the oldest auto racing speedway in the United States since holding its first race
in 1910. The fairgrounds have gone on to host numerous different styles of auto racing and the annual Illinois State Fair
brings in visitors from all over the state to take part in the summer tradition's festivities.
Whether it is the excitement of auto racing, the food, fun, and atmosphere of the state fair, or
dancing and singing along to some of the biggest acts in the music biz you will find it all at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
The Illinois State Fair has been a tradition in the state for more than 150 years and annually draws in thousands upon thousands
of visitors from all over the state looking to have a memorable day full of family friendly fun and unbelievable food. This
year the fair has another stellar line up of musicians that includes American Idol Live, Pitbull, Florida Georgia Line, Boston,
Hunter Hayes, Steely Dan, Jake Owen, and more. Of course, even after the fair has left for another year there is plenty of
exciting auto racing at the Illinois State Fairgrounds that will have you coming back to this fantastic venue all year round.
The Illinois State Fairgrounds is is located just outside of Chicago and people in the Windy
City never face a shortage of things to do. Sports fans can watch the Chicago Bulls of the NBA, the Chicago Blackhawks of
the NHL, the Chicago Bears of the NFL, or MLB's White Sox or Cubs. Additionally there are several local colleges who have
top tier NCAA match ups throughout the year. Of course, Chicago is also known for its vibrant art scene whether it is plays
and musicals at theaters like the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre or the burgeoning music scene that
produces world class jazz, hip hop, and alternative rock. Each summer major rock festivals Lollapalooza and Pitchfork Music
Festival are held in the Windy City, and there are plenty of museums and public works of art to enjoy including the Chicago
Picasso. Shopping on State Street and the Magnificent Mile offers visitors the chance to buy upscale clothes and other items
before heading home.

The Illinois State Fair brings in well
over 700,000 guests each year and there is ample space for visitors to amble about looking for the most exciting attractions,
games, vendors, and food stands. The grandstands and the race track offer seating for some of the exciting races and concerts
held there and also allow guests to roam around looking for just the right spot to spread out and enjoy the action.
One of the most famous attractions at the fair is the life sized butter cow, which is as you may have
guessed, a cow statue made entirely out of butter. The attraction was described in great detail in an article by David Foster
Wallace which was featured in his compilation A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.
