Ina Garten made a dramatic change in her career that turned out to be a successful move. In 1978, she was working in the
White House Office of Management and Budget as a nuclear policy analyst. Longing to do something more creative, Garten discovered
a classified in the New York Times advertising the sale of a specialty food store in the Hamptons. Garten investigated further
and made an offer. With no prior food business experience, she found herself the new proprietor of Barefoot Contessa. Nearly
two decades later, the store's reputation flourished; celebrated for delicious food and its style. The store was sold in 1996
to two of Garten's employees who carried on the food specialty store's established brand until 2003. With nothing else to
do, Garten pursued another career path in trying her hand at writing a cookbook. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook was the first
of several cookbooks Garten authored that garnered overwhelming response. Today, Ina Garten continues the rich traditions
she established with the store by strengthening the brand's identity - authoring new cookbooks and hosting the Food Network's
Barefoot Contessa.
Ina Garten went from balancing books at the White House to measuring ingredients for recipes. With no prior formal training
within the culinary arts, Ina Garten is a remarkable individual who learned culinary techniques with the help of New England
and French cookbooks as well as studying Julia Child's, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She was mentored primarily by
