About Indiana Hoosiers Football

Indiana Hoosiers football has been part of the Big Ten Conference since 1899, making it one of the longest-tenured programs in the league. The Hoosiers play at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana, a venue that has hosted college football since 1960 and seats over 53,000 fans. For most of its history, Indiana was known more for its basketball tradition than anything that happened on the gridiron. That changed in a dramatic way when the program captured its first national championship following the 2025 season, completing a 16-0 run that included a Big Ten title, a Rose Bowl victory, and a College Football Playoff run that rewrote the program's identity.

The roots of Indiana football stretch back to 1887, when the program first took the field. Bo McMillin coached the Hoosiers to their first Big Ten championship in 1945, finishing with an undefeated 9-0-1 record that season. George Taliaferro, a three-time All-American who helped break down racial barriers in college athletics, was a driving force on that squad. John Pont brought Indiana back to prominence in 1967, sharing the Big Ten title and earning the program's first trip to the Rose Bowl. In the late 1980s, Bill Mallory established sustained competitiveness, earning back-to-back Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1986 and 1987 while compiling 69 career wins, the most by any head coach in program history. Running back Anthony Thompson set career records with 5,299 rushing yards and 65 touchdowns during his tenure from 1986 to 1989, earning National Player of the Year recognition in 1989. His No. 32 remains the only retired number in Indiana football history.

Gameday at Memorial Stadium carries the energy of a program that has found its footing on a national stage. The Marching Hundred, Indiana's marching band with roots tracing to 1896, performs a pregame concert known as "The Walk" outside Assembly Hall before greeting players as they arrive at the stadium. The crimson-and-cream faithful fill the stands to the tune of "Indiana, Our Indiana," and the return of the bison mascot in 2025 gave the sideline a new identity to match the program's rise. Rivalry games against Purdue Boilermakers Football, where the teams compete for the Old Oaken Bucket, bring an extra layer of intensity rooted in over a century of in-state competition.

How many championships have Indiana Hoosiers Football won?

Indiana Hoosiers Football claimed its first national championship following the 2025 season, defeating Miami in the College Football Playoff National Championship to cap a perfect 16-0 record. The Hoosiers have also won three Big Ten Conference championships, in 1945, 1967, and 2025. The 1945 title came under Bo McMillin with an undefeated 9-0-1 season, the 1967 title was shared with Minnesota and Purdue and earned the program its first Rose Bowl appearance, and the 2025 championship came after defeating Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Who is the biggest rival of Indiana Hoosiers Football?

The biggest rival of Indiana Hoosiers Football is Purdue Boilermakers Football, with the two programs competing for the Old Oaken Bucket trophy in one of college football's most storied in-state rivalries. The series dates back to the earliest years of both programs, and it remains a protected annual matchup within the Big Ten. Indiana also maintains conference rivalries with Michigan State Spartans Football, where the teams play for the Old Brass Spittoon, and with Ohio State Buckeyes Football, Illinois Fighting Illini Football, and Kentucky Wildcats Football.

Anthony Thompson earned National Player of the Year honors in 1989 and finished as a Heisman finalist that same year after rushing for 5,299 career yards and scoring 65 career touchdowns. Six Hoosiers have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including Taliaferro, Thompson, Pete Pihos, Zora Clevenger, Bill Ingram, and John Tavener. The program has also produced nine Consensus All-Americans across its history.

What is the fan culture like at Indiana Hoosiers Football games?

Indiana Hoosiers Football gamedays revolve around the Marching Hundred, the university's marching band that has been performing since 1896. Before kickoff, the band plays a pregame concert called "The Walk" on the west side of Assembly Hall, then lines the path as players make their entrance into Memorial Stadium. The fight song "Indiana, Our Indiana" echoes through the stands throughout the game. Indiana's mascot, Hoosier the Bison, returned to the sideline in 2025 after a decades-long absence, adding a new visual identity to match the program's rise. The rivalry matchup against Purdue for the Old Oaken Bucket remains the most anticipated home game of the season for longtime fans.
