The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1930 by Ferdinand Schaefer, a German conductor. At first, the symphony
was made up of volunteers—though volunteers of considerable talent. Their debut performance was noted by Time magazine.
Over the years, they grew into a professional orchestra that now gives 200 performances a year.
The historic theater that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performs in is known for being intimate, with 1,781 seats.
The orchestra has made its home in the Hilbert Circle Theatre, which opened in 1916 as a movie palace. In 1984, it was renovated
and became the home of the orchestra. If you’ve never seen a performance here, then get Indianapolis
