Cubs History

MLB stars Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have both made rehabilitation starts for the Iowa Cubs, so there's always a chance to see major league stars out in Principal Park. Over the years, the Cubs have had plenty of memorable, winning seasons, including three conference titles in addition to the two overall league titles. You never know who is going to burst onto the scene next with a banner season, giving you plenty of reasons to head out and see the Cubs the way they were meant to be seen. Minor league baseball came to Iowa in 1969 in the form of the Triple-A Iowa Oaks. The original team was affiliated with the MLB Oakland Athletics, but has since switched around major league affiliations until 1981 when the franchise secured a contract with the Chicago Cubs. These days, the Cubs remain a major staple of the local community, and that's not something likely to change anytime in the near future.

Cubs Trivia

Did you know that Greg Maddux played for the Iowa Cubs?

Maddux may have looked non-threatening, but he was nothing shy of one of the best pitchers ever to play the game, and Cubs' fans got a sneak preview of his talents when he came through Des Moines. Maddux would go on to become one of the most dominant hurlers of all-time with the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves.

The Fans

The home stadium of the Iowa Cubs is Principal Park in Des Moines, which has been bringing in fans by the load ever since it first opened up in 1992. The park holds more than 11,500, but don't be surprised if every seat in the park is filled by the start of the game. With plenty of talent on the roster and a passionate fan base at their back, the Iowa Cubs are looking to round into form and put together yet another nail-biting season of action. We all know that the Major Leagues are great too, but Triple-A baseball is a great, family-friendly experience that is still a great way to see some of the top ballplayers in the world do their thing on the diamond.
