Iowa State Cyclones Football Schedule

Ames, Iowa is simply ready to burst with excitement as the college football season gets underway and the Iowa State Cyclones prepare to take the field. There have been some tough times in recent seasons for the Cyclones, there can be no doubt, but at the precipice of the 2014 season it appears as though big things are in store for Iowa State. Coming out of spring workouts there is every reason for optimism as the offense appeared to really be clicking. Quarterback Grant Rohach impressed in the spring and, combined with some excellent games at the end of last season, looks like he will be able to guide the Cyclones to more wins this year. Aiding Rohach will be a vastly improved offensive line once again anchored by center Tom Farniok who will be battling all season to keep the quarterback upright. If he is capable of getting enough time in the pocket Grant Rohach will have plenty of talented receivers to throw to including tight end E.J. Bibbs and receivers Quenton Bundrage, Jarvis West, Brett Medders, D'Vario Montgomery, and P.J. Harris, all of whom looked fantastic in the spring. The Cyclones are definitely ready to put the 2013 season where they only won two conference games behind them and to move up the Big 12 standings in 2014.

September 6th marks the Big 12 home opener for the Cyclones when the Kansas State Wildcats come to Jack Trice Stadium. The Wildcats are a formidable opponent but getting a win in the first conference home game is vital and you can expect the Cyclones to put forth their best effort. The following home game could be even tougher as the Baylor Bears come to Ames on September 27th. The Bears are the defending conference champions and have been one of the best teams in the NCAA the past few years. If Iowa State can get a home win against Baylor it will really boost their confidence and show the rest of the Big 12 that they are legitimate contenders. The last home game of the season is another important Big 12 match up on November 29th when the West Virginia Mountaineers come to town. Last season the two teams finished with identical conference records and the Cyclones will definitely be looking to take down the Mountaineers to show them that life is not getting any easier for the conference newcomers. Iowa State also has home games against North Dakota State, Toledo, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech this year. With so many great games to choose from it can be hard to make a decision, fortunately StubHub is the place to go for every big Iowa State Cyclones football game each year.

The Team

2014 appears to be the year that the Iowa State Cyclones climb back to be major contenders in the Big 12, and nothing could be better than being in the stadium surrounded by tens of thousands of other Cyclones as they do so. Coach Paul Rhoads had the team motivated in spring ball and after continuing to work in the summer the team should be ready to take on all of the best teams in the Big 12. One thing is for sure, the offense will be firing on all cylinders and lighting up the scoreboard to the delight of all the die hard Iowa State fans in attendance at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Experience

While it has not always been smooth sailing for the Cyclones in recent years, the passion and enthusiasm of both the players and fans has not diminished one bit and this year the excitement at Jack Trice Stadium could reach a fever pitch as the Cyclones move up the Big 12 standings. Cheering for your alma mater or favorite school and watching the student athletes lay it all on the line for school pride and a shot at playing at the next level is one of the most intense feelings in all of sports. College football fans plan their entire Saturday to celebrate everything that comes with the game. These hard core fans get up early and head off to the stadium parking lot for tailgating before the game. Once inside the stadium, fans join together to make as much noise as possible and help the home team leave with a victory. It is incredibly thrilling to be in the crowd when the star player takes the ball into the end zone for a big win. When you head out for an Iowa State Cyclones football game you are sure to experience all of the excitement that comes with a top tier college football game. The parking lot at Jack Trice Stadium will be filled with people gearing up for the big game, grilling up some grub and sipping on a few beverages as well. It's all one big lead up to the main event, which is the game itself. There is simply no better way to spend a day off than at a college football game cheering and celebrating with thousands of other hard core fans.

Iowa State Cyclones Big 12 Football

The Cyclones play in the Big 12 Conference, a traditional football powerhouse that annually features some of the most exciting games in all of the sport. The first Big 12 conference football game took place in 1996 and since 2012 it has played a nine game round-robin style regular season which determines a champion rather than using a championship game as some other conferences do. The traditional powerhouses in the conference include Baylor, Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State but every team in the conference is solid and capable of beating any other team. Baylor enter the 2014 season as the defending champs but this season should be as close of a battle as last year's was and anyone could end up on top of the conference standings.

Trivia

Iowa State has made several appearances in the AP poll but has only finished the year in the AP Top 25 twice, once in 1976 when they finished ranked number 19, and a second time in 2000 when they finished ranked number 25. The Cyclones missed out on playing in a bowl game in 2013 but had played in two consecutive bowl games in 2011 and 2012 and will be looking to make a return to the postseason in 2014.
