About the Isley Brothers
The Isley Brothers would be an all in the family musical group that would form in the
early 50s, initially manned by Ronald, Rudolph, and O'Kelly Isley. The group's early sound would be decidedly gospel, playing
and performing in the cultural capital of New York city while they honed and changed their sound into the commercial doo-wop
powerhouse that they would eventually become. While their initial works were moderately successful, they would truly break
into the mainstream in 1959, consistently topping charts and making regular rounds in the biggest and most acclaimed awards
shows. Over time, the band would add Ernie and Marvin Isley, as well as brother-in-law Chris Jasper, adding to the band's
dynamic sound through introducing funk and new wave rock and roll to the band's songwriting.
Despite the band's struggles
in its earlier years, including the death of band member and younger brother Vernon Isley at the age of thirteen, the Isley
Brothers would persevere through a decade of near disbandments and borderline successes before eventually forming their own
label T-Neck Records. The band experienced a renaissance in 1969 after the release of the hit single "It's Your Thing", lighting
up the airwaves and securing the group's first Grammy win. Now on their second win, the 1970s would be the decade of the Isleys
as the band continued to put out a steady string of commercial and critical hits, a legacy that would carry on for decades
and is still alive and well today.
The quintessential Isley Brothers album is 1969's It's
Our Thing, a masterful cross genre blend that pushed the Isley Brother firmly into the R&B funk limelight. Released on
the band's self run T-Neck label, the album spawned the mega hit tracks "Feel Like the World", "It's Your Thing", and "Don't
Give It Away" with the record eventually hitting #22 on Billboard's Top 40 charts. Alongside its commercial success, the album
was critically acclaimed across the spectrum, with recognition from the Grammy Awards and a near perfect rating from the critics
The band's 1972 followup Brother, Brother, Brother would live up to all of its predecessor's hype, climbing
to the #5 position on the US R&B charts and blending in a special funk rock sound that has been recognized as the pinnacle
of the Isley Brothers' work. The album featured a four star rating from AllMusic and favorable feelings from Rolling Stone,
in part pushed forward by the slew of singles that included "Pop That Thang", "Work to Do", and "Lay Away".
hop lovers will recognize the Isley Brothers' single "Between the Sheets", which was sampled by world famous rap icon The
Notorious B.I.G.. His track "Big Poppa" still blows up the airwaves today, and was featured prominently in Keanu Reeves' 2001
hit film Hardball.
Several other iterations of the Isley Brothers have existed in the past, including the Ernie, Chris
and Marvin trio titled Isley-Jasper-Isley. Today, however, the Isley Brothers is a duo consisting of only Ron and Ernie Isley.
