J. Cole Background

J. Cole was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole in Frankfurt, West Germany on a United States Army base. His family soon moved back to the states, settling in North Carolina, where Cole would fall in love with music at an early age. By the time he was 12 years old, Cole had already started rapping, practicing his lyrics and hooks whenever he could. A few years later, he started to become serious about his hobby, and he joined a local hip hop group called Bomm Sheltuh. During this time, Cole used the stage name Therapist, and also started to get involved in record production. After years of rapping in his hometown, Cole decided that he needed a change of scenery if he were going to find success as a rapper. So when he graduated high school, he enrolled in St. John's University in New York City, hoping that this vibrant music hub would help him achieve his musical dreams.

The young rapper released his first mixtape, The Come UP, in 2007. Although his music generated positive reviews, it wasn't widely received and it virtually went unnoticed. His second mixtape, however, earned him a bigger following, as The Warm Up even caught the attention of one of his greatest rap inspirations, Jay-Z. in 2009, Cole appeared on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 3, and from then on it seemed as if J. Cole's career couldn't be constrained. His songs began to rocket to the top of music charts around the world, and he soon found himself collaborating with some of the biggest artists in hip hop. There's no doubt that J. Cole is a superbly talented artist, and now he is gearing up to take the stage for yet another knockout performance.
