Johnson was born on May 18, 1975 in Hawaii, and grew up to ultimately become a professional surfer who enjoyed skateboarding in his spare time. A surfing injury, however, motivated him to pursue another career to escape the pressures of surfing. He began to write songs while a student at UC Santa Barbara.
