James Taylor Background

The first instrument James Taylor picked up was the cello, yet he switched to the guitar shortly afterward. It didn't take long for others to notice Taylor's talent for music, as he started experimenting with different styles of playing the guitar, infusing his own creativity into every song he played. After years of honing his guitar playing skills, Taylor moved to New York City with his friend Danny Kortchmar to form a band, which they called The Flying Machine. With a repertoire of songs written by Taylor, the band started scoring one gig after another throughout New York, but the band's growing success also led to Taylor's drug addiction. When he realized that he needed a change of scenery, Taylor moved to London in hopes of pursuing a solo career.

Once in London, Taylor's music was shared with Paul McCartney, who immediately decided to sign the young and promising James Taylor to Apple Records, The Beatles' record label. This made James Taylor the first American artist to sign to the label. With Paul McCartney's support on his side, James Taylor knew he had a huge opportunity to showcase his talent and by 1970, Taylor had broken into the music world in a big way. His 1970 single "Fire and Rain" rocketed to the tops of music charts around the world, and helped his sophomore album, Sweet Baby James, sell a million and a half copies in its first year alone. From that moment on, James Taylor was a force to be reckoned with in the music world. He has scored countless charting singles, has earned platinum, muti-platinum, and diamond certifications for his albums, and has even pocketed five Grammy Awards over the course of his career. He has also been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
