James Taylor Background
James Taylor was practically born into a life
of music. His mother was a classically trained musician who had studied singing extensively, and she gave birth to several
musically inclined children. Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina when he was three, and whether he was
spending his summers in Massachusetts or his time in North Carolina, you could bet that young James Taylor was indulging in
his love for music. Taylor started off his journey in music as a cellist, but switched to playing the guitar by the time he
was 12. Instruments came easily to James Taylor, who seemed to have a natural knack for playing songs by ear and for imbuing
each song with his own style.
During his teenage years, Taylor began writing his own songs, and he and a friend would
play regular summer gigs in Martha's Vineyard. During his senior year of high school, Taylor suffered from a serious bout
of mental illness and he checked himself into the McLean Hospital in Massachusetts. In addition to recovering from the stresses
and worries that plagued him outside of the institution, Taylor started to hone his songwriting skills. He recovered quickly,
and after leaving the hospital in 1966, Taylor formed a band called The Flying Machine. This band never achieved much success,
however, and disbanded not long after its formation. Taylor then decided to pursue a solo career in music, so he packed up
and moved to London, where he snagged a record deal with the Beatles' label, Apple. Taylor worked hard on writing and recording
his first eponymous album, which he released in the late '60s. Although the album received glowing reviews from music critics,
it hardly sold any copies, and Taylor returned to the U.S. with a heavy heart. After battling with addiction and more psychiatric
issues, James Taylor decided that the best place to pursue his love for music was in California, so he journeyed across the
country to Los Angeles.
James Taylor finally found success with his second album, Sweet Baby James, which was released
in 1970 under Warner Brothers' label. For the next decade, James Taylor was a smash success. With one successful release after
another, James Taylor had become the talk of the town, and he remained so until the mid-1980s, when his fame momentarily faded.
He picked back up, however, in the '90s, and has been putting on knockout shows and cranking out awesome folk rock tunes ever
since. With a career that has spanned over four decades, James Taylor is easily one of the most renowned artists in the current
music industry. Not only is he incredibly respected by his peers and aspiring artists, but he has also earned countless awards
and prestigious honors over the years.
