Musical talent runs through James Taylor's veins, as his mother was trained as a classical opera
singer before she married Taylor's father. So as a young boy, Taylor was encouraged to follow his musical dreams. He first
learned to play the cello, and soon after switched to learning the guitar and the keyboard. While he and his family summered
in Martha's Vineyard, Taylor and his friend, Danny Kortchmar, would play at various coffee houses around the Vineyard. Back
at his home in North Carolina, James joined a band with his brother, Alex, called The Corsayers, in which James played the

New York City with Kortchmar to form a band. After accruing a few other band mates, Taylor's band The Flying Machine started
to gig throughout New York City. The group recorded several songs under Jay Gee Records, some of which made it onto the radio
with decent airplay. Despite the promising future of the band, Taylor's drug abuse ran rampant, and his family brought him
from New York back home to North Carolina.
Once recovered, Taylor moved to England to embark on his solo career. He
once showed some of his demos to Peter Asher, who was head of the Beatles' record label Apple Records, and with Paul McCartney
on board, Apple Records signed Taylor. Although he fell back into heavy drug usage during this time, signing with Apple Records
helped launch his career. He later moved to California to get clean, keeping Asher as his manager and producer. In 1969, Taylor
released Sweet Baby James, an album that launched his career and thrust him into the international spotlight as a talented
