James Taylor Background

Musical talent runs through James Taylor's veins, as his mother was trained as a classical opera singer before she married Taylor's father. So as a young boy, Taylor was encouraged to follow his musical dreams. He first learned to play the cello, and soon after switched to learning the guitar and the keyboard. While he and his family summered in Martha's Vineyard, Taylor and his friend, Danny Kortchmar, would play at various coffee houses around the Vineyard. Back at his home in North Carolina, James joined a band with his brother, Alex, called The Corsayers, in which James played the electric guitar.

During the latter part of his high school years, Taylor experienced mental health troubles, crippling under the stress of academia and adolescence. In 1965, he committed himself to McLean Hospital in Massachusetts to recover and rehabilitate from his depression. To this day, Taylor still thinks of his time at McLean as "lifesaving", and his mental troubles gave way to some of his deepest and most reflective songs.

After he checked out of McLean, Taylor moved to New York City with Kortchmar to form a band. After accruing a few other band mates, Taylor's band The Flying Machine started to gig throughout New York City. The group recorded several songs under Jay Gee Records, some of which made it onto the radio with decent airplay. Despite the promising future of the band, Taylor's drug abuse ran rampant, and his family brought him from New York back home to North Carolina.

Once recovered, Taylor moved to England to embark on his solo career. He once showed some of his demos to Peter Asher, who was head of the Beatles' record label Apple Records, and with Paul McCartney on board, Apple Records signed Taylor. Although he fell back into heavy drug usage during this time, signing with Apple Records helped launch his career. He later moved to California to get clean, keeping Asher as his manager and producer. In 1969, Taylor released Sweet Baby James, an album that launched his career and thrust him into the international spotlight as a talented singer-songwriter.

From the moment of his big breakthrough in 1970, Taylor became a huge phenomenon, accumulating five Grammys, countless hit songs, a diamond certified album, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This is definitely one music legend you don't want to miss seeing live.

Greatest Hits

Over the course of his career, James Taylor accumulated six number one singles and 16 best-selling studio albums. Some of his most popular hits include "Fire and Rain", "You've Got a Friend", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Handy Man", "It's Growing", and countless more. Seeing James Taylor perform his expansive repertoire of critically and commercially acclaimed hits is definitely something that you don't want to miss!

The Taylor family clearly has musical talent in their genes. All of James' four siblings (Alex, Kate, Livingston, and Hugh) have recorded albums and showcased their own musical capabilities. His mother was also trained as a classical opera singer before settling down and starting a family.
