Jamie Cullum Background

Jazz sensation Jamie Cullum first got his start in music at the tender age of eight, playing piano and guitar. And, as a teen he played the drums for a hip-hop group. He additionally picked guitar for groups called Raw Sausage and The Mystery Machine. Cullum cut his debut album, Jamie Cullum Trio - Heard It All Before, in 1999. At the time, only 500 copies were dropped. But today that album can garner up to $800 on eBay. The album fell into the hands of jazz bassist Geoff Gascoyne, who listened to Cullum's inaugural effort, and asked Cullum to appear on his album, Songs of the Summer.

A graduate with honors of Reading University, Cullum issued his sophomore album, Pointless Nostalgic, after graduation. The album sparked the interest of both Melvyn Bragg and Michael Parkinson. As a result, he was invited to guest on Parkinson's BBC chat show. And, in 2007, he was the final musician to entertain on Parkinson's "Final Conversation" show. The album featured original collections of classic songs like George Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "Well You Needn't" by Thelonius Monk. After Cullum's debut on Parkinson's show, he was put on Universal's payroll contingent on producing three albums. Twentysomething arrived in 2003, which garnered platinum certification. In the UK, the album earned the No. 1 Album by a Jazz Artist honor. By the close of 2003, Cullum was the best-selling jazz artist of all time. Twentysomething featured renditions of Cole Porter's "I Get A Kick Out of You" and Jeff Buckley's "Lover, You Should Have Come Over." Cullum's cover songs have cemented his reputation in the music world. And, when he does live shows, he often covers artists ranging from Rihanna to Radiohead to White Stripes to Kanye West. He has additionally shared the stage with Sugababes, Burt Bacharach, Kylie Minogue, Deltron 3030 and more. In 2005, Cullum released Catching Tales, followed by the release of Live at Ronnie Scott's in 2006. Three years later, Cullum came out with The Pursuit. It's lead-off track, "I'm All Over It," popularized by tremendous airplay. His latest album is Momentum, which was issued in 2013.
