Jay Brannan Background
under the watchful eye of a Southern Baptist community, Jay Brannan never quite fit in. After a less-than-perfect experience
with college in Ohio, Brannan relocated to L.A. to pursue an acting career. At the age of 20, he picked up his first guitar.
He also put down the bottle and dealt with his alcohol dependency. With his new-found passion, he began penning tunes with
no real formal training. He relied on a string of CDs done by hopeless female artists as his guide. Eventually, Brannan ended
up in New York. He tried out for the film, Shortbus. He scored the role, and he found himself comfortable in his own skin
for the first time. "I finally learned to trust myself as an artist and began to believe that I do have something to contribute,
a concept that had been beaten out of me in just a few years of attempting a career in entertainment," he said.
became a hit and so did Brannan's contribution to the soundtrack, "Soda Shop." He played his music at events that promoted
the film, which offered him a global sounding board to stage his music. Brannan also leveraged the Internet. Using his insomnia
to his advantage, Brannan took the time to respond to emails from around the planet. He also posted "Soda Shop" on YouTube,
which much to his surprise, garnered massive attention. "I was a random guy at home f*ing around with his computer, thinking
no one would ever watch the video if I posted it. I guess I was wrong," Brannan said. He continued to post his original material,
receiving the same warm and tremendous response. The millions of views have inspired Brannan to pursue his musical endeavors
Brannan also took his music to live shows, performing in front of sold-out audiences in New York City. And,
he went beyond his hometown by booking shows in places like Tel Aviv, Cape Town, Toronto, Paris, L.A. and Vancouver. These
shows sold out well ahead of time as well.
In 2008, Brannan put out his albumGoddamned on his own self-owned label,
Great Depression Records. The following year he came out with In Living Cover, which climbed to No. 10 on Billboard's Top
Heatseekers chart. And, Rob Me Blind dropped in 2012.
