About the Artist
Jay Z, born Shawn Carter,
has been a fixture on the hip hop scene since even before the release of his debut album Reasonable Doubt. Haling from the
Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, Jay Z benefited from the tutelage of Notorious B.I.G. before his passing and told vivid tales
of his life on the streets which gave him instant street cred as well as setting the stage for his huge crossover success.
He opened the 40/40 Club, was instrumental in the building of Barclays Center in Brooklyn which brought the former New Jersey
Nets of the NBA to Brooklyn, is a co-founder of Rocawear as well as Rocafella Records, and more recently founded Roc Nation
Sports in which he serves as a sports agent for NBA and MLB players. He has has three albums named among the top 500 greatest
albums of all time according to Rolling Stone who also named him the 88th greatest artist of all time. Jay Z has won 17 Grammy
awards and has sold more than 75 million albums across the world. He is also known for his lavish lifestyle and is married
to pop superstar Beyonce.
While Jay Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt would eventually go
on to receive platinum status, he was certainly no overnight success. Jay Z worked hard performing around the neighborhood
in which he grew up and had no major label support for his early recordings and would typically sell CDs out of his car after
shows early in his musical career which led him to found his own label Rocafela Records with his friends Kareem Biggs and
Damon Dash. Slick production and an appearance by The Notorious B.I.G. on Reasonable Doubt caused the album to gain attention
as well as critical praise. His third album proved to be his first huge success with the song Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)
receiving major airplay on radio stations across all formats as well as major airplay on MTV. The strength of the album's
sales led Jay Z to duet with Mariah Carey on one of her hit singles and he was well established as a mainstream superstar.
You have been waiting for months, if not years, for this night to come and finally as the lights
lower you begin to see Jay Z making his way out onto the stage. The crowd erupts in applause as the talented performer approaches
the mic. A hush falls over the crowd as Jay Z thanks them and launches into a fan favorite like Big Pimpin,' Hard Knock Life
(Ghetto Anthem), Can I Get A...., or 99 Problems. The crowd once again erupts and sings and dances along to hits throughout
the night. Jay Z may still be in is a veteran performer who definitely knows his way around the stage and how to work a crowd,
this will be evident from the moment he hits the stage until the second he steps off accompanied by the cheers of thousands
of fans. The high energy output from Jay Z and his touring group translates perfectly to the crowd and you spend the entire
night dancing and singing along.
Despite all of his success, Jay Z's carer has not been without
controversy as he has had notable beefs with other artists including Nas and Prodigy. Jay Z was charged with stabbing Lance
Un Rivera in 1999 at the Kit Kat Club in New York during Q Tip's record release party. Allegedly Jay Z had stabbed Rivera
for selling bootleg copies of his latest album.
