Beck was born on June 24, 1944 in England, and began his career by playing as a session guitarist. He was recruited to play with the Yardbirds after Eric Clapton left, and the band enjoyed their greatest commercial success while Beck was a member. After a short time with the Yardbirds, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group which featured Rod Stewart as their singer, and their work during this time was considered some of the earliest heavy metal ever recorded.
