Jennifer Nettles Background
Hailing from Douglas,
Georgia, Jennifer Nettles began singing along to the radio at a young age. She also learned to play piano and began penning
songs as a child. She performed publicly at church events and other special events and eventually became a member of a 4-H
group, billed as the Clovers and Company.
When Nettles went on to college, she founded the Soul Miner's Daughter with
Cory Jones. She formed her own band in 1998, The Jennifer Nettles Band, and was invited on the Lilith Fair tour of 1999. Soon
Nettles cultivated a loyal following. Her alternative folk sound resonated with fans of all ages.
In 2000, Nettles cut
the Story of Your Bones album. A few years later, Nettles collaborated with Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush, seasoned veterans
of the Atlanta alternative folk scene. The trio made the decision to become a country band. They inked a deal with Mercury
Nashville record label in 2003 and cut their debut album, Twice the Speed of Life, a year later.
Their song, Baby Girl,
turned out to be a tremendous hit, cementing Sugarland's path to country music stardom. The tune unravels the story of a young
singer's journey to fame and fortune through a string of letters written to her parents.
Sugarland's initial album also
included a number of other hits, like Stand Back Up and Something More. The album eventually hit album sales of 2 million
Compounded with Sugarland's commercial success, was the fact that Sugarland cultivated critical acclaim as well.
They earned nominations for numerous Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards in 2005. They additionally won the category for
Top New Duo or Vocal Group.
The year 2006 brought some changes for the group. Kristen Hall exited to focus her energies
on writing songs. As a duo, Sugarland was invited to tour with headliners like Kenny Chesney.
Sugarland issued their
sophomore album, Enjoy the Ride, which spawned numerous Top 10 hits, such as: Everyday America, Stay and Settlin'.
standout song of that album was Stay. Stay swept the ACM Awards for Single Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Nettles
blazed a trail in having become the first woman to have penned the ACM Song of the Year on her own.

hand on the song.
When it's all done and said, the album turned out to be another prime example of a hit - selling over
2 million copies.
Nettles worked on a side project - also in 2006 - with rocker Jon Bon Jovi. Who Says You Can't Go
Home ended up garnering nominations for many awards, including the Country Music Association (CMA), Award for Musical Event
of the Year.
The year 2008 brought Love on the Inside, which established Sugarland as one of the most coveted country
music acts around. In the first week of the album's debut, it sold more than 314,000 copies. The golden egg from that album
was All I Want to Do. A deluxe edition of the album came out later in the year, which included a cover of Life in a Northern
Town by Dream Academy. Little Big Town and Jake Owen collaborated with Sugarland on the live version, serving as an example
of Sugarland's dynamic inspirations.
Sugarland claimed five CMA Award nods in September 2008 and won the Vocal Duo of
the Year award. They released Gold and Green, a holiday album, in 2009. And in 2010, The Incredible Machine hit the airwaves,
which included the catchy Stuck Like Glue.
Nettles made the decision recently to bust out on her own. She collaborated
with Rick Rubin on her solo project, That Girl.
