Jerry Richardson Stadium

Jerry Richardson Stadium

History

Jerry Richardson Stadium might be new, but it has become one of the most exciting new football stadiums in the country. The idea to build a new football stadium for the University of North Carolina Charlotte 49ers football team was first brought to the university's chancellor in 2008. The projected cost of the stadium was more than $11 million a year. But despite its hefty price tag, it wasn't long before donors were lining up to contribute to this massive undertaking. One of those donors was Carolina Panthers' owner Jerry Richardson, who not only paid for the naming rights of the new facility, but also gave an additional $10 million to support the university's football program.

A groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2011, and by 2012, the first informal scrimmage was taking place in the newly-constructed stadium. The first official football game took place in August of 2013, where the 49ers took down the Campbell Fighting Camels. More than 16,000 cheering fans filled the stadium during the first game, and the crowds continue to grow for each home game.

Teams/Events Hosted

Jerry Richardson Stadium is home to the University of North Carolina Charlotte 49ers. But unlike other football teams that inhabit Division I stadiums, the Charlotte 49ers do not have a long franchise history. In the late 1940s, a group of young men who attended the university began getting together to play football. This was the beginning of athletics at UNC Charlotte. And although the team was fairly successful, it was dissolved in 1948 when World War II put a damper on enrollment and participation.

This all changed in the summer of 2006, when a group of Charlotte students and alumni got together to form a committee that would lobby for the installment of a Division I football team. With plans for a new football stadium already in the works, the students and alumni got their wish. Not only did the university get a new stadium with the start of the 2013 football stadium, but they also got a football team to cheer for. Now, these devoted 49ers are coming out in droves to see their school represented on the field.

Home City

This state-of-the-art stadium is located in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina just off of Highway 29. This picturesque city, located near the Catawba River, is the athletic capital of the East. With a population that makes the city one of the largest in the country, Charlotte has a plethora of sports fans just waiting to watch their favorite team battle it out on the court or the gridiron. The town has numerous parks and green areas for outdoor entertainment and contains a riverside community that is inspired by the San Antonio River Walk. The banking industry is quite large in Charlotte, helping to support many local athletic programs and facilities, including Jerry Richardson Stadium.

Seating Layout

When you come out to Jerry Richardson Stadium you will have the opportunity to take a seat in the horseshoe-shaped stadium that can hold more than 15,000 spectators. An area of bleachers can seat an additional 13,000 cheering fans. Each position in the stands offers a view of the artificial turf playing surface and the beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina scenery. There are two dozen luxury boxes and 200 premium "White Gold Tier" seats that are available for private citizens and corporations. And while some seats in the stadium may be closer to the field than others, every seat in the stadium provides a great view of all of the action on the field.

Trivia

The stadium hasn't been around long, but it has already amassed a short history that has entered the facility into the history books. While the football stadium only has permanent seating for a little more than 15,000 spectators, the first game of the 2013 season—which was the first game for both the team and the stadium—drew a crowd of more than 16,000 cheering fans.

And the stadium's namesake, Jerry Richardson, is a history-maker himself. He has become one of the only former NFL players who has become the owner of an NFL franchise (the Carolina Panthers) and the namesake of a college football stadium. As the stadium begins its long history with the UNC Charlotte 49ers, it is sure to be the site of a plethora of exciting and history-making events.
