Jill Scott built her career from the ground up in Philadelphia, starting as a spoken word poet performing at live readings before catching the attention of The Roots' Questlove. That connection led to a co-writing credit on the Grammy-winning track "You Got Me" and set the stage for one of the most distinctive voices in neo-soul. Her 2000 debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, went platinum and introduced a sound that fused R&B, jazz, spoken word, and hip hop into something entirely her own.
Born and raised in North Philadelphia, Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and studied secondary education at Temple University before pivoting to music full-time. She was the first artist signed to Hidden Beach Recordings, and her early catalog established her as a soprano vocalist with rare range, drawing comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Deniece Williams for her command of the upper register. Follow-up albums Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007) both achieved gold certification, while The Light of the Sun (2011) and Woman (2015) each debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Her sixth studio album, To Whom This May Concern, arrived in February 2026 after a decade-long hiatus from studio recordings.
Beyond music, Scott has carved out a respected acting career with roles in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? film series, the BBC/HBO series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and the James Brown biopic Get on Up. She also voiced Storm in BET's Black Panther animated series and played the recurring villain Lady Eve on The CW's Black Lightning. Her published poetry collection, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours (2005), reflects the same literary sensibility that shapes her songwriting.
