Jimmy Buffet Background

Born on Christmas Day in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Jimmy Buffet was raised in Mobile, Alabama. He left Mobile to study at the University of Southern Mississippi, where as rumor has it that he picked up the guitar to meet the ladies. He relocated to Nashville after college to chase his dream to be a country music singer. Buffet collaborated with a band in Nashville known as The Now Generation. He inked his first recording deal in 1970. In that same year, he put out Down to Earth. High Cumberland Jubilee followed, with both efforts slipping under the radar.

Always mesmerized by the water, Buffet decided to make the move to Key West in the early part of the '70s. It was there he developed his signature beach bum image. Under this new persona, Jimmy Buffet came out with White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean in 1973. Party anthems like Why Don't We Get Drunk (And Screw) followed, allowing Buffet to land a huge fan base - fans who could appreciate the easygoing nature of his much-loved live shows. It wasn't long before fans started taking on a persona all their own. Decked out in Hawaiian shirts, the wardrobe of choice, fans traveled in hordes and billed themselves "Parrotheads."

Buffet eclipsed the mainstream music scene with Changes in Latitudes (1977), his sixth album, which contained the now-legendary party tune, Margaritaville. Son of a Son of a Sailor came next in 1978, featuring Cheeseburger in Paradise. The two albums claimed gold status.

In the late 1980s, Buffet leveraged his laid-back, beachcombing image and built a business empire by coming out with multiple books, his own line of beachwear, a restaurant franchise and his own Margaritaville record label.

Today, Jimmy Buffet continues to lend his voice to collaborations with artists like Alan Jackson and the Zac Brown Band, and continues to light up stages all over the world. To find out where his flip-flops are going to be planted next, be sure to stick right here on StubHub. Don't miss out on the festivities!

Jimmy Buffet Albums

Not exactly making it big in the very beginning of his music career, Jimmy Buffet took some time to get his career off the ground, but in the end his music went so many more places than he had ever dreamed. After a debut album that was more in the vibe of a country music sound, Jimmy Buffet began to gain a bit of notoriety for his music that at times were a bit risque, later finally getting a song into the charts with the song Come Monday that focused on relationship separation. So while he had been making music for about five years and had issued a string of albums, it wasn't until 1977 with the release of Margaritaville on the album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes that he found the relaxed, tropical feeling and persona that catapulted him to stardom. Margaritaville was a hit along with the accompanying album, turning him into a star for years to come.

Jimmy Buffet Trivia

Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet is of course well known for his island brand of catchy music, but he is also a notable author and actor as well. In addition to penning songs for many soundtracks, including Summer Rental starring John Candy and for Fast Times at Ridgemont High among others, Buffet has also made multiple cameo appearances. You can get a glimpse of him in movies like Hook, Cobb, Hoot, Repo Man, Congo and From the Earth to the Moon. He also made guest appearances in CBS' Hawaii Five-O. And as far as his writing goes, Jimmy Buffet is the author of three No. 1 best-sellers, A Pirate Looks at Fifty, Tales from Margaritaville and Where is Joe Merchant? He is now one of eight authors to land at No. 1 on both the fiction and non-fiction New York Times Best Seller lists. He has also co-authored The Jolly Mon and Trouble Dolls, both children's books.
