Jimmy Buffett Background
Buffett spent most of his childhood in the South, growing up in both Mississippi and Alabama. During elementary school, Buffett
got his start in music by playing trombone in the school band, but it wasn't until his freshman year at Auburn University
that he picked up the guitar. Buffett's love for music was undeniable, and after graduating from the University of Southern
Mississippi, he moved to Nashville to work for Billboard magazine. His move to Nashville proved fortuitous, for it was here
that Buffett launched his own musical career. Buffett first started singing in Nashville as a country artist, recording his
first album, Down to Earth, in 1970. During this time, Buffett also spent a great deal of his spare time in New Orleans, playing
for tourists on the streets - Buffett just had to be performing for someone at all times!
In 1971, Buffett packed his
things and moved out to Key West, a tropical paradise that helped shape his beach-bum persona that helped ignite his career.
Being inspired by the laid back island lifestyle of Key West, Buffett started writing numerous songs, blending country with
folk, pop, and coastal to create a unique sound. It wasn't until 1977 that Buffett experienced a true musical breakthrough,
however, with the release of his album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, which featured his hit song, "Margaritaville".
The 1980s were Buffett's time to shine, as he constantly sold out shows wherever he went, performing his hit island escapism
songs to eager fans. During this decade, Buffett also joined in on a business venture to open the Margaritaville Café
chain, and has since used his business savvy to open numerous clubs, restaurants, and even gift stores based on his beach-bum
image. Throughout the years, Buffett has taken many trips to the Caribbean and the Bahamas to gain inspiration for his catchy
tunes, and Buffett has become arguably the best known artist of his subgenre. No matter what tropical resort you head to,
you can bet that at some point during your stay you will hear "Margaritaville" blasting through the speakers.
