Joan Osborne was born July 8, 1962 in Anchorage, Kentucky. While studying at N.Y.U.'s film school she sang at local "open mic nights" and decided that singing was something she wanted to do. Osborne made her own record label, Womanly Hips, and released her first in- concert album Soul Show. After that, Osborne signed on with Mercury and released hits like "One of Us" in 1995, which sat at number one for two weeks.
