Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers Background
Joe Grushecky was a high school special
education teacher when he got the idea to pursue his love for music and start a band. In 1976, he started a group called Brick
Alley Band that played in various bars around the city. The group gained so much local attention that they signed to Cleveland
International Records in 1977, and changed their name Iron City Houserockers. The Houserockers received warm reviews with
their debut album, Love's So Tough (1979), and their follow up album, Have a Good Time but Get Out Alive! (1980). The band
kept touring for years to moderate success, but broke up in 1984 because of their poor record sales.
After the Iron
City Houserockers split up, Joe Grushecky returned to Pittsburgh and took up teaching again. While he was teaching, which
remains one of his great passions to this day, Grushecky started to work on his songwriting skills. He kept practicing and
writing songs, sharpening his skills and gearing up to get back out on stage to perform again. In 1989, he decided to get
a new band together, titled Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers. His solo work earned him great fans in Pittsburgh and surrounding
areas, making him a sort of local legend. He started cranking out one fantastic album after another, even gaining the recognition
of Bruce Springsteen, who decided to produce Grushecky's 1995 album, American Babylon.
