John Oates Background
John Oates was born in New York City, but he spent most of
his childhood just outside of Philadelphia. Oates started to develop a deep love for R&B and folk music, and he had recorded
his first single before he had even graduated from high school. Oates wrote and recorded "I Need Your Love" one year before
graduating from North Penn High School, and he later enrolled in Temple University in Philadelphia, a decision which would
put him on the path to musical stardom. It was at Temple University that John Oates met Daryl Hall, and after playing in several
college bands together, the two musicians decided to form a duo, and thus was the beginning of the mega-duo Hall and Oates.
