History

John Williams is a composer, conductor, and pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest film composers of all time. In a career that spans more than 60 years, he has composed several of the most popular and easily-recognized film scores in cinematic history, such as Jaws, the Star Wars series, Superman, the Indiana Jones series, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the first two Home Alone films, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, the first three Harry Potter films, Catch Me If You Can, Memoirs of a Geisha, War Horse, and Lincoln.

Additional well-known works by Williams consist of theme music for four Olympic Games, NBC Sunday Night Football, the NBC Nightly News, the Statue of Liberty's rededication, the TV series Lost in Space and Land of the Giants, and the original theme song to Gilligan's Island. Williams has also composed a variety of classical concerti, and he held the position of principal conductor for the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993. He later became the orchestra's conductor laureate.

Williams has earned 5 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globe Awards, 7 British Academy Film Awards and 21 Grammy Awards. Having garnered 49 Academy Award nominations, Williams is the second most-nominated person, surpassed only by Walt Disney. Williams also received the annual Richard Kirk award at the 1999 BMI Film and TV Awards, in recognition of his contribution to film and TV music. Williams was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2000, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004.

Williams' father was a jazz percussionist who played with the Raymond Scott Quintet. Williams was born in Floral Park, New York, but the family moved to Los Angeles in 1948, where Williams attended North Hollywood High School. After graduation, he went on to attend UCLA, where studied privately with the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 1952, Williams was drafted into the U.S. Air Force, where he conducted and arranged musical scores for The U.S. Air Force Band as part of his assignments.

When his Air Force service ended in 1955, Williams relocated to New York City and enrolled at The Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne. Around that time, Williams served as a jazz pianist in a number of New York clubs before eventually scoring gigs in studios and working with composer Henry Mancini. He later served as music arranger and bandleader for a string of pop music albums, collaborating with the singer Frankie Laine.

As his career progressed, Williams collaborated with composers such as Franz Waxman, Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman, Conrad Salinger, and Bob Franklyn, among others. Williams also performed on film scores by composers like Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, and Henry Mancini. Williams partnered with Henry Mancini to record the film scores of 1959's Peter Gunn, 1962's Days of Wine and Roses, and 1963's Charade. His first film composition was written for the 1958 B movie Daddy-O. Because of his versatility in writing jazz, piano, and symphonic music, he began to stand out in Hollywood. Williams garnered his first Academy Award nomination for his musical score for the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls. He was nominated again in 1969 for his score for the film Goodbye, Mr. Chips.
