The Event

Named after one of the most beloved sports figures of all time, John R. Wooden, the John Wooden Classic has been completely reformatted to create the Wooden Legacy, an eight team, 12 bracket event that will take place over 3 days. The event is the fusion of the John Wooden Classic and the Anaheim Classic, and is sure to become the highlight of the NCAA preseason tournaments. Changes to the original event include one that says that a team can only play in the tournament every four years and that only 1 school from a conference can participate. The Wooden Legacy strives to bring the nest of college basketball every year, with a postseason environment before conference play even begins. Basketball fans will flock to Southern California for an incredible three days of basketball, tradition and, of course, the sunny Los Angeles weather.

This years tournament takes place November 28-December 1st with great basketball programs like Arizona State, Marquette, Creighton and San Diego State as the first teams to compete in this new format. Also a departure from the previous format, the Wooden Legacy will take place at two different locations. The first round will take place at Titan Gym, the home court of Cal State Fullerton. For the later rounds, the event shifts to the home of the John Wooden Classic, the Honda Center in Anaheim.


The Sport

Men's College Basketball is a passion for millions of Americans, especially come Tournament time when it truly is March Madness. The sport was invented by James Naismith, a physical education teacher who wanted to come up with a sport that was fun and could help keep kids in shape. Naismith wrote the original basketball rulebook and later became the Athletic Director at the University of Kansas and the founder of their stories basketball program.

Student athletes are the original players of this great sport and they carry Naismith's beloved pastime with them year after year, making it one of the most watched sports in the world. College Basketball is always the center of the sports world in March, when teams who win their conference, conference tournament or earn an at-large bid, make a 64 team tournament that has become one of the most beloved sports competitions of the year. Once the tournament begins, any team can win on any given day, whether you are a the #1 seed in the tournament or a "Cinderella" team that no one picked in their bracket. Only in College Basketball can small schools from small conferences like Gonzaga, Butler and Memphis become powerhouses of the sport year after year. The fast paced nature of the sport grabs your attention, but it is the magic of the idea that any team can win the championship that captivates basketball fans year after year.


The Experience

The John Wooden Classic has always been on the most hallowed preseason events of the year. John Wooden was one of the most beloved and respected figures in the history of the game, leaving a legacy that far surpasses the sport of college basketball. His achievements as head coach of the UCLA Bruins are unparalleled, winning 10 national championships in 12 years and winning 88 games in a row. He coached some of the sports legendary players like Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor.

The event, named after such a master of this great sport, has always been an incredible event, bringing together some of the top programs in the country. This year, now restructured as an 8 team tournament, will definitely make the event even more incredible then before. Fans will be treated to a tournament atmosphere featuring some of the best programs in the country. Whoever cuts down the net at the inaugural Wooden Legacy will definitely feel the pride that comes with winning an event named after one of the most iconic men of this great sport.


The History

The John Wooden Classic was formed in 1994 as a tribute the legendary UCLA Bruins coach John R Wooden, an innovator of this great sport. The tournament was created to honor the coach and the excellence he personified throughout his long career in College Basketball. Always held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, the John Wooden Classic is a showcase of great basketball in Southern California. Throughout the years, the event has been tied to Wooden's beloved UCLA Bruins, but with the transformation to the Wooden Legacy, the Bruins will only be able to participate every four years. The change in format allows the event to bring in a wider array of programs from all over the country and a chance to bring even more attention to this incredible preseason event.


John Wooden Classic Trivia

Which member of John Wooden's own family was able to play in the John Wooden Classic and for what team did he play?

John Wooden's great grandson Tyler Trapani, a 6' guard, was able to take the floor in UCLA's 72-54 win over DePaul in the 2008 John Wooden Classic. Though he never played any meaningful time for the Bruins, his appearance in the tournament named for his beloved great grandfather is certainly of the great moments in this tournaments history.
