Johnny Mathis grew up in San Francisco, California, and it wasn't long before Johnny started showing
his talent for music. His father, who had worked in vaudeville, quickly realized that Johnny had incredible potential as a
musician, so he bought his son a piano to practice his skills. Johnny took to the piano fast, and before he knew it he was
performing whenever he had the opportunity: for friends and family at home or at school and church functions. By the time
he was 13, Johnny Mathis knew that he wanted to become a singer, so he started to take his craft seriously and took vocal
lessons for six years. He didn't throw all of his eggs into one basket, however, and enrolled at San Francisco State University
after graduating from high school. Because of his phenomenal athleticism, Mathis scored an athletic scholarship to SFSU, and
he went with the intention of eventually becoming an English teacher.
Even though Mathis was such a successful athlete
(he was even invited to try out for the US Olympic high jump team) he knew in his heart that his biggest passion would always
be music. There came a point in his life where he had to choose between pursuing athletics and pursuing music, and ultimately
he chose music, with his father's encouragement. So Mathis packed up and headed to New York City, where he recorded his first
album and started to sing at local nightclubs and music venues. He gained the attention of Columbia Records, who saw the phenomenal
potential in young Johnny Mathis and decided to produce his second album. By the late 1950s, Johnny Mathis was already an
icon in the music world. His 1958 Greatest Hits album spent a whopping 491 consecutive weeks on the Billboard music charts,
solidifying his position in the music industry as an unprecedented performer.
Throughout the '60s, Mathis experienced
much of the same success, recording hit tracks like "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late", "Gina", and "What Will Mary Say". He
performed duets with some of the biggest names in music, such as Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Deniece Williams, Natalie
Cole, Jane Olivor, and Stephanie Lawrence. Whether he was up on stage with another superstar or performing solo, Johnny Mathis
knew exactly how to amaze his audience. To this day, Mathis is still one of the best performers in the music world, and his
fantastic repertoire of hit songs makes each and every Johnny Mathis performance a unique and exciting experience. This Grammy
Hall of Fame artist has earned countless awards and accolades over the years, and his record of selling over 350 million albums
worldwide has made him one of the best-selling artists in history. Johnny Mathis is a legend in the music world, and you shouldn't
