Jon McLaughlin Background
Jon McLaughlin's innate talent came to light when he was a child. To
help nurture his abilities, his parents signed him up for piano lessons. McLaughlin enjoyed crafting his own sounds on the
piano and had a hard time adapting to rigid lessons. He said, "I took lessons every Thursday and I'd come home complaining
to my mom. My dad traveled during the week for work, and when he'd call on Thursday nights, I'd inevitably give him the same
grief I gave my mom. To their credit, they never forced the lessons; they allowed me to talk it through and somehow, at the
end of every conversation, I'd say, 'I think I am going to keep going.' They had infinite patience with me."
ahead with his piano lessons until at the age of 15, he broke both of his wrists caused by a rollerblading accident. McLaughlin
said he felt somewhat relieved that the lessons came to a halt. He had an epiphany that his interest in developing his own
sound and music wasn't going to wane.
After high school, McLaughlin set his sights on studying music at Anderson University
in his native Indiana. At that time, he also began playing around with the just budding MySpace. After posting some tunes,
he realized that the number of "plays" was climbing daily. "I began playing live shows on weekends with my band, which I loved
doing. One day I was in the computer lab and got a MySpace message from someone at an independent label telling me they liked
my stuff. I literally couldn't believe it. By the end of my senior year in college, I was corresponding with several major
label A&R people, making plans to play some shows in New York City."
And, McLaughlin did exactly that. When record
label bigwigs courted him, he had lunch with them during the day and jammed through the night at showcases. McLaughlin eventually
inked a deal with Island Def Jam Records. He jetted off to L.A. and Music City for some songwriting sessions. Of the experience,
McLaughlin said: "No disrespect to the people I worked with, because they are phenomenal songwriters, but it was hard for
me. It felt forced, and I was used to writing in my dorm room where I was never looking at a clock, worried about writing
a radio hit or appealing to the masses."
His first album, Indiana, dropped in 2007. OK Now followed in 2008. Both efforts
were hits and McLaughlin ended up taking the stage with artists such as: Adele, Duffy, One Republic, Paolo Nutini, Matt Wertz,
Kelly Clarkson, Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat and more.
For his next studio album, Forever If Ever, McLaughlin footed
the bill himself. Eventually, he signed on to the Razor & Tie record label. He re-issued Promising Promises in 2012, followed
by Holding My Breath in 2013.
