Jordan-Hare Stadium History

With its first game taking place all the way back in 1939 between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Auburn freshman teams, the then aptly titled Auburn Stadium held a total of 7,290 seats. Since its humble beginnings, the Jordan-Hare stadium has made large strides to become the massive coliseum that it is today. After multiple additions and expansions, the Jordan-Hare stadium has been transformed into one of the best stadiums in the country for college football. The man the Heisman trophy was named after, John Heisman, actually coached at Auburn from 1895 to 1899. And just to add to the mammoth size of the legendary stadium, before the 2007 season a new high definition LED 30 foot by 74 foot video display was installed, making Auburn the first SEC school to have an HD video monitor, and the second in the entire NCAA. This awe inducing stadium reached its staggering seating capacity of 87,451 when it expanded in 2004 and is ranked as the twelfth largest stadium in the NCAA. The name of this wonderful stadium comes from two people involved in the football games that took place there. First off was Ralph Jordan, who, as head coach of the University's football team, had the most wins, and then Cliff Hare was a member of the first football team that Auburn had and was also Dean of the Auburn University School of Chemistry.
