Josh Ritter Background

Born and raised in Moscow, Idaho, Josh Ritter was inspired as a teenager by the music of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. After listening to his parents' copy of Nashville Skyline, he took a crack at writing his own songs on a lute that his father had crafted. He ended up discarding the lute and buying his very first guitar at K-Mart. Following graduation from Moscow High School in 1995, Ritter went to Oberlin College in Ohio to major in neuroscience. He later abandoned neuroscience and changed his major to the self-created, American History Through Narrative Folk Music.

At the ripe old age of 21, Josh Ritter recorded his self-titled first album at a studio on the Oberlin College campus. Following college graduation, he trekked to Scotland to attend the School of Scottish Folk Studies for a six-month stint. He came back to the states and spent some time back in Idaho before relocating to Providence, Rhode Island, and then Somerville, Massachusetts, taking on temp jobs and playing music at open mic gigs. His dedication to his music and selling his albums at open mic nights, led him to being spotted by Glen Hansard and his band, The Frames. They invited him to travel to Ireland with them, which turned out to be a pivotal move for Ritter's career.
