Justin Vivian Bond was born Stanley Huffman Bond III in Maryland, where he always knew he was different from his peers. Unlike the other boys his age, he preferred to play with the girls and wear his mother's lipstick. He used his childhood experiences that were often painful, as fuel for his extraordinary stage career. He studied theater at Adelphi University and then moved to San Francisco shortly after graduating. It was here that Bond met Kenny Mellman who would become his business partner and the Herb part of the cabaret act Kiki and Herb. Bond played an elderly alcoholic woman who could perform covers of songs at the drop of a hat. He played this character for many years, receiving Obie and Bessie Awards for his portrayal. In 2004, he retired the Kiki persona and embarked on a solo career. He released his first EP, Pink Slip in 2009 and his debut album Dendrophile in 2011.
