K Flay Background
Kristine Flaherty, known by her stage name
K Flay, grew up in the suburban town of the Windy City, Wilmette, Illinois. She was self-described as a tomboy, wearing baggy
attire and maintained a distance from all things "girly." She eventually abandoned her tomboy ways by the time she entered
her freshman year at New Trier Township. At the formative age of 14, she was greatly affected by the untimely death of her
father. Growing up she had devoured her father's classic rock records and would stay up late dancing to Parliament-Funkadelic
in the living room. Her father had been a great musician and many of her songs are a tribute to him. Though a great appreciator
of music, K Flay got her start during her freshman year of college at Stanford University. She and a friend were discussing
the simplicity of modern rap music saying how most hip-hop hits were formulaic and misogynistic. Proclaiming that even she
could pen something like that, Flaherty spent that night crafting a song called, "Blingity Blang Blang." She describes the
song as a "low-budget rap parody that contained far too many obscenities." After writing this mock track, Flaherty realized
that she actually enjoyed writing music and wrote two more songs by the end of the year. The following summer was a period
of experimentation. She continued writing songs and also discovered how to record them as musical tracks on her laptop. She
began performing for live audiences during her sophomore year, and in her junior year, her debut album, Suburban Rap Queen,
was released. This album earned her a local buzz and generated a fan base, thanks in part to her Internet presence on the
website, MySpace. K Flay has made a name for herself by serving as her own producer in the studio and methodically infusing
her hip-hop swagger with a dash of sonic sound. Releasing various EPs and albums, Flay has created a name that's all her own.
Her most recent album, Life As A Dog, was issued in the early summer of 2014, and she is currently on tour in North America.
