Born in Nashville, TN but currently residing in the artistic hotspot of Detroit, MI, Kim "Kem" Owens is a producer,
musician, songwriter, and singer with serious cred. In his early life he would experience addiction and homelessness, but
surmounted these obstacles to become an amazingly popular rhythm-and-blues artist in the twenty-noughts and twenty-teens.
Renowned for his upbeat, relaxed, and cozy sound, Kem has been nominated for a Grammy and carries on the customs of quiet
storm talents like Anita Baker, the Isley Brothers, and Smokey Robinson. His loving and thoughtful ballads bring a constant
supply of comfort to his fans around the world.
Kem would release his debut album, Kemistry, himself through funds earned
through serving in restaurants and singing in a wedding band. This self-made artist would sell ten thousand copies of his
independent debut album. These numbers got the attention of the Motown label, who then signed Kem for five albums and released
Kemistry for nation-wide consumption in February of 2003. In May of 2005, Kem would release his sophomore album entitled Album
II. After the release of his second album, Kem would not be very active as a musician for a while, although he was featured
on the fourth album of the Jazzmatazz series by Guru. An album entitled Intimacy would come out in August of 2010 as Kem's
third and would also be released on the Motwon label. In 2012, Kem would release a holiday album entitled What Christmas Means.
In 2013, Kem would write and produce "My Favorite Thing" for the album This Song Is For You by Ronald Isley. In August of
2014, Kem would release his fourth album entitled Promise to Love – yet another collection of gentle, smoothly optimistic
Kem's debut album Kemistry would make it to the Top 20 on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B
Album chart. It would sell ten thousand copies, making it a gold record. The obvious reason for Kem's instant success is his
maturity and well-roundedness as an artist – he produces and writes is own material as well as playing the keyboard.
Additionally, from the beginning, he was confidently modest about his talent, never getting too flashy in spite of his vocal
range of four octaves.
Album II would sell five hundred thousand copies in the United States alone, and be certified
gold. Here, Kem found a solid fan base among adult listeners, due to his style being as understated and smooth as songs from
the late 'seventies and early 'eighties. Self-assured as ever, Kem's sophomore album confirmed his status as a skilled R&B
and jazz artist.
Intimacy would also be certified gold. It would also peak at number two on the Billboard 200. This
album would be as smooth as ever but nonetheless be an expansion of his first two releases. Intimacy would be more directly
sensual and have a wider range of subject matter, from personal peace to mothers. This album's single "Why Would You Say,"
would be nominated for both Best R&B Male Performance and Best R&B Song at the Grammys.
of the reasons for Kem's success among a mature audience, apart from is incontestable classiness, is that he does not make
any hip-hop stylistic choices.
