Kendrick Lamar Background
in Compton, California, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth's parents relocated from Chicago to Compton to get away from the city's notorious
gang culture, although his father had been linked to the Gangster Disciples gang. As the West Coast became inundated with
gang activity and the crack trade boomed in the '80s, Lamar grew up around perilous street violence but he seemed to be more
influenced by it than harmed. He overcame his circumstances and kept his grades up and enjoyed writing, starting with stores
and poems and then lyrics.
Despite being in the thick of the precarious street activity, Lamar remained soft-spoken
and wistful. Eventually he called himself K-Dot and started putting his lyrics to use as a rapper. At age 16, he distributed
a mixtape. Youngest Head Nigga in Chargestirred up some attention in his Southern California locale and beyond. His independent
effort was enough to draw interest from Top Dawg Entertainment, who gave him a record deal. Lamar forged ahead releasing Training
Day (2005) and C4 (2009), two other acclaimed mixtapes. He additionally collaborated with Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul.
2010, Lamar got rid of the K-Dot label and started using his own name. He released a fourth mixtape, Overly Dedicated. That
same year, he put out his debut full-length independent album. Released only on iTunes, the album illuminated Lamar's talent
and his unique observations on street life.
Lamar continued to pen lyrics and music as well as tour and work with other
talents - including Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Talib Kweli, The Game and Young Jeezy. As one of hip-hop's most esteemed
and inspirational producers, Dr. Dre became Lamar's mentor.
Dr. Dre signed Lamar onto his independent label, Aftermath
Entertainment, joining the ranks of more high-profile stars like 50 Cent and Eminem. Now the observant, soft-spoken kid who
kept up his grades in school was primed to become rap's newest celebrity.
In the fall of 2012, Lamar's first album,
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, dropped. The much-anticipated major-label album was very well-received. Hit tracks like "Poetic Justice"
and "Swimming Pools (Drank)" paved the way for him to make some key television appearances while publicizing the album, including
Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. This cemented his fan base, not only
among rabid hip-hop fans but also among alt rock fans and college students.
His appeal to the masses didn't end there.
His insightful lyrics on his first album grabbed the interest of hip-hop critics as well, with MTV presenting him with the
"Hottest MC" of 2012 title - putting him in the ranks with other rappers who claimed the title like Kanye West, Lil Wayne
Today, Lamar's popularity continues to grow as he becomes more and more appreciated for his keen observations
of street culture, frequently analyzing the psychology of crime victims. In an interview with The Guardian, he said: "That's
the most interesting story to me. At first, I was scared to show fear because you can never be sure how people will perceive
you. But I dared myself to do that, to stand out."
