Kenneth Gorelick was born on June 5, 1956 in Seattle. He learned to play the sax on a rented model by listening to records and attempting to duplicate the sounds he heard. He played in the band in high school, and his success there landed him a backup gig in one of Barry White's shows in 1976. It was at this time that he adopted his stage name.
