About Kevin James

You may not recognize it if you saw the name Kevin George Knipfing, but it is the name given to Kevin James at birth. Kevin James was born in Mineola, New York, where he grew up with both of his parents and two siblings. One of his siblings is also a comedian who goes by the name Gary Valentine. Like a fair share of other celebrity comedians, Kevin James did not graduate from university, after attending for a period of time and joining the fraternity Pi Lambda Phi at State University of New York at Cortland. Instead, Kevin James started working at the East Side Comedy Club in Long Island, New York where he made his comedy debut.

Kevin James Breakthrough

One of the ways in which a comedian can tell if they broke through is laughter, but what is more is being invited to appear on television. Kevin James became increasingly popular as he was asked to be on shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Late Show with David Letterman and more. He was given his first role on television as an announcer for MTV's game show SandBlast that only aired for two years in the mid 1990s. After Kevin James befriend fellow comic Ray Romano, James was given he opportunity to appear on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. He soon started to develop his own sitcom entitled The Kings of Queens that ran from 1998 to 2007. During this time he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He lost to Tony Shalhoub from the television series Monk.

In addition to stand-up and television, Kevin James has been in movies too. His film debut was Hitch, which is a romantic comedy that started Will Smith and Eva Mendes. He also co-starred in the film Grilled with Ray Romano. In addition to his acting abilities, he provided voice for Monster House and Barnyard. Both were animated films. Kevin James also collaborated on films with Adam Sandler: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The collaborations with Adam Sandler were not well received by audiences, having given relatively negative reviews. Although, Paul Blart: Mall Cop opened as the number 1 film in North America even though the reviews were not ace. Other films in which Kevin James has acted are Grown Ups, The Dilemma, Zookeeper and Here Comes the Boom. Similar to the film Paul Blart, Grown Ups did well in the box offices after having been panned by critics. That is one of the most interesting aspects of comedy is that it may work one day and not the next.

Keeping up with the rise in web series and the successes of other comedians, Kevin James and his brother Gary Valentine started one called Dusty Peacock that started streaming on Crackle, an online distributor of web-based shows. Following in the footsteps of other popular comics, Kevin James hosted the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. While hosting the Kids Choice Awards, he is not just for the young ones. Kevin James is a comedian that brings laughter to all ages in the appropriate context. To put it in perspective, Kevin James came in at 89 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians.

Kevin James Experience

Kevin James' comedy is well received by many different audiences. Many got a good sense of who he is as a comedian on his television show The Kings of Queens, in which he depicts an everyday American man who is outspoken when it comes to his grievances. Having recently wrapped up on Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 in June, it will be interesting to see his current stand-up tour. He has such a wide-range of comedy experience from which to pull while on stage. Not to mention, the comedic stories that one's personal life provides as fodder for laughter. It is no doubt fatherhood has shaped the comedy of his stand-up.
