Kina Grannis Background
Kina Grannis' very first audience was her stuffed animals. That's
right; at the tender age of four, she showcased her talents in front of her unbiased, inanimate furry friends. Alas, Grannis
has come a long way since then - in more ways than one. In her former life, Grannis was very timid and self-described as being
"awkward." But, now Grannis finds herself quite comfortable and at home playing in front of people. The California songstress
cut and released three EPs on her own at USC, where she studied for four years. In 2007, she subscribed to YouTube and crafted
a music video. She even took it a step further by signing up for the Crash The Super Bowl contest sponsored by Doritos. The
online community soon took notice and Grannis found herself with followers - tons of them. But it was the airing of her video
for "Message From Your Heart" during the Super Bowl XLII that triggered a hailstorm of publicity. Not only did her video reach
the Super Bowl's nearly 100 million viewers but it helped elevate her numbers on Twitter and YouTube. She also earned No.
1 video on Digg.com and scored a record deal with Interscope Records. But, ultimately, she let go of the record contract to
concentrate on cutting and issuing her own songs that she had poured her heart over for years. Running with her creative control,
she issued Stairwells in 2010. The album cracked Billboard's Top 200. It also yielded the No. 5 spot on the iTunes Pop Chart.
She also dropped a music video to support her track, "Valentine." The video attracted over 10 million views on YouTube and
was also included on Yahoo! Music. Later on, the single netted Grannis the honor of being named Sirius Radio's Coffee House
Singer/Songwriter Discovery of 2010.
Her days of sneaking into the stairwells of her college campus to play in private
were definitely in the rear view mirror in 2010 - proven by her tireless touring schedule. That year, Grannis crisscrossed
the U.S., playing to sell-out crowds at high-profile venues like the Highline Ballroom in New York and the Troubadour in L.A.
She additionally shared the stage with Mary J Blige, Metric and Sarah McLachlan at Lilith Fair. You can still find Kina Grannis
on stage today as well as behind her computer connecting with her 450,000 YouTube subscribers.
