Kings of Leon Background
This Nashville-based band has one of the most
interesting backstories in rock band history. Brothers Nathan, Caleb, and Jared Followhill spent most of their childhood on
the road, traveling throughout the South with their father, a Pentecostal preacher. Because the family spent so much time
on the road, the three boys were largely homeschooled or enrolled in parochial schools, yet they occasionally got the chance
to taste the performing life when their father let them play some instruments at his sermons.
When their parents got
divorced, the Followhill brothers turned to rock music and drugs, and soon they became deeply absorbed by rock culture, so
they moved to Nashville in the hopes of breaking into the music industry. The Followhill brothers went from a childhood that
banned secular music to listening to heavy rock acts like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, and the brothers embraced this
culture shock with an optimistic and excited outlook. The brothers' cousin, Matthew Followhill, soon joined them in Nashville
to complete the quartet, and the band started practicing their own music together, playing at various local venues, and before
they knew it, major record labels were vying to sign the group. After an intense bidding war from nine record labels, Kings
of Leon decided to sign with RCA Records.
The band released their debut EP, Holy Roller Novacaine, in 2003, and immediately
started generating massive buzz throughout the rock world. Rolling Stone magazine even gave their debut EP a 4/5 rating, and
rock lovers everywhere started talking about this up and coming Nashville band. Kings of Leon kept releasing tracks and albums
to great critical acclaim, but it wasn't until 2008 that the band experienced a major commercial breakthrough. The band's
fourth studio album, Only By the Night, featured major hit singles "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody". These two singles flew
to the tops of music charts around the world, and just like that, Kings of Leon had become one of the biggest bands in music.
