About Kings of Leon
Kings of Leon is comprised of four members of the Followill clan - brothers Caleb, Nathan,
and Jared who are joined by their cousin, Matthew. Originally hailing from Oklahoma and Tennessee, the band got its start
on the gospel music scenes of the deep south as the boys moved around the country with their father Ivan Followill, a well
known Pentecostal preacher who toured much of America giving sermons. At each venue that Ivan preached, the boys would make
early inroads on the music scene as they performed for various congregations across the country.
The the late 90s the
four youngsters of the Followill clan would make the move to musical mecca Nashville, Tennessee, intent on making a big break
into the music scene and embracing a musical lifestyle that was drastically different from their home schooled, on-the-road
preaching past. The band mates immersed themselves in the rock scene, gaining influences from all corners of the greater rock
and roll genre, including The Pixies, The Clash, The Velvet Underground, Thin Lizzy, and the Rolling Stones. The Followill
family spent their initial years in Nashville honing their sound, and by 2002 were ready to officially form a rock band, an
outfit that by the end of the decade would be one of the most successful and influential acts in recent rock history.
band's first major signing came with RCA Records, after putting together a demo while tucked away in the basement of the band
member's Nashville home. Their EP's debut would immediately garner widespread attention on the music scene, with praise given
from Rolling Stone that set up the band for their 2003 full length that would jump start the band into stardom. Their raw,
garage sound was likened to some of the biggest upstarts that the new decade had brought, alongside rock saviors the Strokes,
the Vines, and Hives. Their influences such bands as the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd saw them as new wave revivalists,
capturing the best of the past and integrating it with the authentic dynamism of the modern era. By 2006, the band had become
a household name and was touring the globe with a consistent stream of hit albums that consistently reshaped the rock scene.
Their sound consistently evolved a more refined, classical element to it all the while retaining the rock rebel roots that
had brought them to fame in the first place.
The band's fourth full length release, Only
by the Night, would drop in 2008 and become a commercial and critical mega hit. While their previous albums had demonstrated
success, nothing quite matched Only by the Night, which would move over two million units and receive over two dozen platinum
certifications. The album hit the number one position on the Australian, Belgium, New Zealand, and UK charts and hit an impressive
#4 on the US Billboard 200. The album spawned an unprecedented six hit singles, including "Sex on Fire", "Use Somebody", "Frontier
City", "Crawl", "Notion", and "Revelry". Produced by longtime band associate Angelo Petraglia and the visionary Jacquire King,
the album received rave critical reviews with a perfect score from The Guardian and four stars from Q, Spin, and Uncut magazines.
The band's first demo would be the result of a month of nonstop recording that spawned some of their most
memorable early hits, including "Molly's Chambers". The band would more or less kidnap their young cousin, just sixteen at
the time, and keep him recording with them for over a month straight.
