Music Festival Background
Knotfest Music Festival's roots date back to the late summer of 2012 when what is hailed
as the "heavy metal summit" convened for the first time in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then again in Somerset, Wisconsin. The
group, Slipknot, is the mastermind behind the event's launch. The inaugural event featured Lamb of God, the Urge, Cannibal
Corpse, Deftones, Dethklok and more.
At the time of its inception, M. Shawn Crahan "Clown," told Rolling Stone magazine:
"It's all about having fun and bringing something to the world of rock and roll, bringing it to the standard it used to be.
It's time for us to really engulf this idea known as Knotfest where we're in control, we make a day devoted to our mindset,
our ideas, the people that we want to play with, the people that we think our fans want to be around."
The debut event
also featured pillars of fire, burlesque performers, stilt walkers, circus big-top tents, amusement park rides and the unveiling
of the Slipknot museum, highlighting relics and keepsakes handpicked by Slipknot's band members themselves.
on the latest 2014 event, explaining that, "Knotfest is a chance for Slipknot to bring the sensory-overload of a wild European
festival - and now we're coming for you, California. Playing two different sets over two nights at one location is a new experience
in the history of this band. This year's Knotfests in the U.S. and Japan are going to be on another level."
Clown referenced Japan. It was officially revealed in the spring of 2014 that Knotfest Japan would be held in Tokyo in November.
