About Kool and The Gang

Over their fifty years of performing, Kool and The Gang have managed to constantly change and reinvent their sound while still retaining their addicting, talent filled signature style. The band's transformations have been many, shifting and changing with the musical landscape just as members flow in and out of the band. Through it all, Kool and The Gang have stayed not just relevant, but on the cutting edge of whatever genre they have drifted to. From jazz to pop to disco to boogie, Kool and The Gang have been consistent master practitioners over their musical retinue since 1964.

While the band has had various members come and go through the years, some members have remained fixtures in The Gang's ranks and constantly influenced and directed their musical style. This includes Robert Bell (cool himself) and his brother Ronald Bell; James Taylor crooning on vocals; George Brown, the loyal percussionist; Larry Gittens on trumpets, with iron lungs and a penchant for flourishes; Dennis Thomas on trumpet; Claydes Charles Smith, always laying down his signature guitar sounds; and Rick Westfield bringing some flavor to the lineup with his expertise on the keyboards.

Kool and The Gang started as a family and friends affair in the mid 1960s, but soon catapulted to international acclaim by the 1970s when they were putting out hit album after hit album. By 1975, Kool and The Gang had become the quintessential funk icons of a generation, with funk anthem theme songs that any young American can belt by heart today. Their success wouldn't just be across North America, as Kool and The Gang expanded their musical avenues all across the world, sharing their unique American funk sound with peoples from all over the globe.

Over the years, various members of Kool and The Gang have left to start their own projects, but the spirit of The Gang has never left. Though key departures and even at some time untimely passing aways affected the band deeply, they always kept their funk origins and soul filled spirit unhindered by the world around them.

Previous Hits

The band has released over two dozen full length releases, consistently topping charts and weaving their over sixty hit singles into the fabric of the global scene. The band's breakout release Wild and Peaceful dropped in 1973, and would quickly climb to #6 on the charts and be the bands first official certified gold album. The album would be carried by megahit "Jungle Boogie" along with other popular hits "Funky Stuff" and "Hollywood Singing". "Jungle Boogie" would become one of the anthems of funk music everywhere, and brought funk music into the mainstream by storm.

1979 would bring the band's first platinum certification, as Ladies' Night hit the #1 spot on the Billboard and cemented Kool and The Gang's position at the forefront of the funk movement. The album featured for the first time vocalist James Taylor, and was carried by the memorable singles "Ladies' Night" and "Too Hot". "Ladies Night" would eventually hit the #1 position on Billboard's R&B chart, and remains a crowd favorite over thirty years later.

Trivia

The band's singles have been featured across all sorts of mediums and media, including Quentin Tarantino's cult classic Pulp Fiction as well as disco era megahit movie Saturday Night Fever.
