Shortly after her birth in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, La India's family moved to the South Bronx are of New York. In 1985,
the 14-year-old La India joined the Latin freestyle group TKA and later signed a record contract with Reprise/Warner Bros.

When Salsa band leader Eddie Palmieri visited one of La India's studio recordings, he immediately offered to produce her
first Spanish-language album, Llego la India via Eddie Palmieri (The India has Arrived via Eddie Palmieri). The album
was hailed one of the best salsa albums of the year and Caballero had officially become known to the world as "La India."
Since then, La India has continued to develop her talent, and to collaborate with some of the best artists in the business.
She has recorded with Marc Anthony, Louis Vega, Celia Cruz (the late Queen of Salsa, who bestowed upon India her longer nickname
