Ladysmith Black Mambazo Background

Joseph Shabalala is the man behind the group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Shabalala put the group together back in the early part of the 60s. Once assembled, they played local events such as weddings. They took their music a step further and began to compete in isicathamiya, a singing style native to the South African Zulus, contests. Ladysmith Black Mambazo stood out among the crowd at every turn and were later on banned from even competing. They were, however, allowed to play at the contests. In 1973, they cut their debut album, Amabutho. That first effort earned gold certification as did many of their other albums. But it was their work with the legendary Paul Simon in the mid-80s that set the stage for their success with global releases. For his Graceland album, Simon trekked to South Africa to enlist the help of musicians there. He connected with Shabalala and before they knew it, Ladysmith Black Mambazo was off to London to collaborate with Simon. Post-release of Graceland, Simon served as producer for Ladysmith Black Mambazo's debut U.S. album, Shaka Zulu in 1987. The album garnered a Grammy in 1988. The group has gone on to achieve worldwide acclaim and earn a multitude of awards and honors. Today, after spending a half century on stage, Ladysmith Black Mambazo shows no signs of slowing down!
