Don't miss out on one of the holiday seasons best college basketball events, where great basketball games are just the beginning of the fun.

The Sport

During the holiday season, when vacations begin and families get together, college basketball is always a family favorite. One of the most exciting college basketball events during the holiday season is always the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. What could be better than jetting off to Sin City to see great basketball teams like UNLV Runnin Rebels, Santa Clara Broncos, and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles? College Basketball is one of the great teams sports, with student athletes leaving it all on the floor, buzzer to buzzer. Fans across the world fill out their brackets and hold on for the amazing upsets, nailbiters and heroic efforts that make up the beloved NCAA Tournament. But long before the 64 top teams in the country can vie for the lead role on "One Shining Moment", they need to rack up as many good non conference wins as possible. At this year's Las Vegas Classic, eight teams will come to play hard and take home wins to boost their con conference schedule. Don't miss the chance to enjoy great basketball from teams coast to coast all while taking in all of the great entertainment of Las Vegas.

The Experience

Its hard to beat the atmosphere at the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic every December. It may be chilly where you are, but on the Las Vegas Strip, the weather is nice and warm. The home of the Las Vegas Classic is the famed Orleans Arena, voted the #1 mid size arena in the country, is located just west of the Las Vegas Strip, and puts fans right in the middle of all the great entertainment and dining available in Las Vegas. As for the tournament, the field is filled with exciting teams like the hometown UNLV Runnin' Rebels fresh off another NCAA Tournament run. The Santa Clara Broncos, from the very competitive West Coast Conference, come into the 2014 season as the defending champions of the CBI, the College Basketball Invitational, a postseason tournament. Another team that will thrill fans is the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, or aptly known as "Dunk City." You'll be hard pressed to find a more talented group of high flying dunkers than the Eagles. Florida Gulf Coast is best known for their amazing run in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, where the 15th seeded Eagles pulled off the very rare defeat of a 2 seed, the Georgetown Hoyas. In the second round, the Eagles proved that the victory was no fluke by beating the San Diego State Aztecs on their way to the Sweet Sixteen, a first for 15 seed. College basketball fans will definitely not want to miss this incredible group of teams as they compete in the 13th annual Las Vegas Classic.

History

For 13 years, teams from all across the country have been heading to Las Vegas, Nevada over the Christmas holiday to compete in a non tournament style event that brings great exposure for each team. Many of college basketball teams have participated in this great event, as they look to boost their national exposure and non conference schedules. The Las Vegas Classic does an incredible job of bringing together programs from different conferences around the country who may have never faced each other before. In 2012, one of the best battles of the event's history took place when the West Virginia Mountaineers took on the Missouri State Bears on December 22, 2011. This game is the closest game of this this illustrious event, with the game going to overtime. Bob Huggins' Mountaineers were heavily favored in this game, but the pesky Bears played tough and stayed with them all the way into the bonus period. Missouri State had a chance to tie the game as time expired in overtime, but the Mountaineers held on to a 70-68 victory at the Orleans Arena. West Virginia power forward Kevin Jones, now a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, led the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The game is a very important one in Mountaineers history as it was Coach Huggins' 700th career win.
