Lauryn Hill Background
in East Orange, New Jersey, Lauryn Hill was raised in a middle-class, musically oriented family. Her family constantly spent
time playing and performing music; her mother played the piano, her father sang, and her entire family always enjoyed listening
to some great tunes. Because of this musical influence while growing up, Hill naturally gravitated toward pursuing music as
both a hobby and a career. Throughout middle school and high school, she performed the national anthem at many sports games
and school events. And when she was a freshman in high school, she and a friend, Prakazrel "Pras" Michel, created a music
group. The now world-famous multi-instrumentalist Wyclef Jean also joined the group, and they played in local talent shows
and small community events.
While music was her first passion, Hill also developed a love and a fascination for acting.
She soon started taking acting lessons in New York City, and eventually starred alongside major actors like Whoopi Goldberg
in major theatrical productions.
Hill achieved a good amount of success as a young actress, but she continued to pursue
music at the same time. She, Pras, and Jean changed the name of their music group to The Fugees, and signed a contract in
1993 with Columbia/Ruffhouse Records. The trio blended rock, soul, and reggae to create a unique and wildly infectious sound.
Their debut record experienced moderate success, making it to number 62 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
But it was their subsequent albums that really got them noticed by international audiences.
Soon, Hill's singing and
rapping abilities were being showcased all around the world, and their second album, The Score, sold millions of copies almost
immediately. It stayed in the top ten of the U.S. Billboard 200 for almost six months, causing the group's fame to skyrocket.
After years of monumental success, the trio broke up in 1997 to pursue solo projects. Hill's solo career was an immediate
success, and in 1999, she became the first woman to be nominated in ten different categories in one year. With countless awards
and accolades under her belt, as well as several top singles and best selling albums, there's no doubt that Lauryn Hill is
one of the best artists of the past several decades. And you have the chance to see her perform live! Head to StubHub right
away to avoid missing out on this incredible opportunity!
Lauryn Hill's solo album, The
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was certified 8 times platinum by the RIAA. This hit album included singles like "Doo Wop (That
Thing)", "Ex-Factor", and "Everything is Everything". She has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in hip hop
and R&B, including Nas, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Method Man, and of course, Wyclef Jean.
Hill grew up in the same neighborhood as future actor Zach Braff, who starred on the TV comedy, Scrubs. The two attended school
together, and Hill even went to Braff's Bar Mitzvah.
Few artists have experienced the amount
of success that Lauryn Hill has, likely because there are few artists as wildly talented as this singer-songwriter and rapper.
Her R&B and soul tunes have dominated R&B radio for years, and she has become known as one of the breakthrough female
artists in the hip hop and R&B industry. This music legend doesn't just crank out phenomenal hit tracks, but she also
puts on incredible performances. Make sure you get to see Lauryn Hill perform her hit songs as she stops at venues around
