Born in the Big Easy, Ledisi Young was just
eight years old when she sang with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. And, she spent countless hours watching her own mother
entertain with a local R&B band. Eventually, her family moved to Oakland, California, where Ledisi traced her mother's
footsteps and fronted and sang in a local band. Later on, she exited the band to establish her own identity and her very-own
group. She earned her own solid reputation for her performances in a long-running cabaret based out of San Francisco. Known
as Beach Blanket Babylon, it featured celebrity impersonations, song parodies and tremendous hats. She secured her spot after
given a Shellie Award nod in 1990 for her performance as Dorothy in a local rendition of The Wiz.
Later on, she established
Anibade, her middle name. The band was comprised of Cedricke Dennis (guitar); Sundra Manning (principle songwriter/keyboards);
Wayne Braxton (saxophone); Nelson Braxton (bass); and Tommy Bradford (drums). Ledisi and her newly formed group built a hot
brand in the Bay Area, playing local clubs like Rasselas, The Black Cat and Bruno's. Loyal followers requested an album, so
the band obliged and cut a demo called, "Take Time." Radio station KMEL played the song with positive listener response. This
encouraged Ledisi to go after major labels. The labels gave her praise but turned her down just the same. Not to be discouraged,
Ledisi recorded Soulsinger and issued it on LeSun Records - a label owned by Ledisi and Manning. The CD fared well without
the advantage of mainstream distribution. LeSun developed their own successful marketing campaign that went beyond the usual
Web page. They sold T-shirts, their CD and other merchandise along with saturating the Internet with details about them. In
2001, Web-based retail giant, Amazon, ranked Soulsinger No. 5 in L.A. It also gained ground in Norway, London, Amsterdam and
Finland as well.
Ledisi went on to cut a jazz album with Marcus Shelby, a bassist, under the Noir Records label. Lost
& Found, her third album, arrived in 2007. Two of its tracks, "In the Morning" and "Alright" settled into the Top 50 of
Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It also earned two Grammy nominations. Issued in 2008, It's Christmas included
updates of "What a Wonderful World" and "Give Love on Christmas Day." A year later, Turn Me Loose came out, and included collaborations
with Raphael Saadiq as well as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It turned out to be her most coveted disc, and it peaked on Billboard's
R&B Albums chart, and charted in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. Another pair of Grammy nods resulted from her efforts.
In 2011, Pieces of Me, dropped, featuring Chuck Harmony, Mike City and Rex Rideout. It landed at No. 8 on the Billboard 200.
Truth is her latest album, which came out in 2014.
Ledisi's studio albums include: Soulsinger:
The Revival (2000); Feeling Orange but Sometimes Blue (2002); Lost & Found (2007); It's Christmas (2008); Turn Me Loose
(2009); Pieces of Me (2011); and The Truth (2014).
Ledisi has been recognized throughout
her career for her talents with several awards and nominations. She has been nominated nearly 10 times for Grammy Awards and
once for the BET J Cool Like Dat Award. She claimed the award for Outstanding Jazz Album in 2003, presented by the California
Music Awards. And, she was nominated for a pair of Soul Train Awards in 2009 and 2011.
